Talon Tommie Alastair..the story

02/18/2010

Talon Tommie Alastair...the story

So I came into the hospital February 16th at 5:30...I was supposed to be here at 5 but I was running late. They were supposed to put in the medicine as soon as they were done taking my blood and all that but first of all the pharmacy had completely run out and secondly Dr. Nelson (the obgyn on call, also the man who delivered Isabel; that info will be important later) was in a meeting. So I ended up sitting around watching TV until a little before 8 pm. Finally Dr. Nelson came in and performed a VERY painful pelvic exam to see if my cervix was doing anything at all...it was still completely green and unmoved. He then put in the medicine...I can't remember the name of it but it was a vaginal suposotory that goes right up against the cervix to soften it. Well my friend Wendi had to go through the same thing with her son and the medicine made her start having contractions so I asked the doc if it would be the same way with me. He told me that the medicine CAN cause contractions but that it wasn't very likely because that wasn't what the medicine was designed for and not to expect anything to happen that in fact it could take as long as TWO days...BOY WAS HE WRONG!!! He put the medicine in at 8 pm I was in full contractions at 8:15!!! In an hour my contractions had started hitting every minute and every contraction lasted a minute and a half...it wasn't until they got that bad that they agreed to start an IV and give me some pain medication. They gave me a medication called Steadol which did NOTHING at all...I went through that all night long. At about 6:30 in the the next morning they took me off the pain medication and started an Oxytocin drip which is the medication that induces labor it wasnt until 8:30 that they decided to give me a dose of morphine...it helped me sleep a little but every contraction still woke me up screaming. I kept begging them to give me my epidural...I have NEVER IN MY LIFE felt pain like I was going through EVER...but everytime they checked my cervix it still hadn't done much and it had to be at least a four before they were allowed to give me the epidural. So I went through that pain until about 12:30 in the afternoon, finally the nurse checked my cervix and told me it was only a three at which point I burst into tears begging her to please let it slide...so even though she wasn't supposed to and even though it hurt like the dickens she forced me to a four so I wouldn't have to hurt anymore. I'm not even going to go into what getting the epidural was like, lets just say that its not painless but its COMPLETELY worth it. So FINALLY at 1 pm I was comfortable and pain free, naturally I fell asleep. Ironically however I woke up 20 minutes later with pain and pressure, looked over at my mom and told her "get a nurse...this baby is here!" needless to say everyone in the room started to scramble and to my utter horror I realize that John had gone for a smoke break and was no where to be seen...I panicked! If it hadn't been for the delay caused by a missing nurse AND a missing doctor JOHN would have missed the babies birth luckily though he showed up right on time! But as it turned out after momma and Wendi pushing the call button a million times and finally rushed out into the hall to figure out why no one was answering it was revealed to us that both the doctor (Dr. Nix) and the nurse were in another room where a woman was giving birth and that they had called in Dr. Nelson (which is the doctor that I wanted due to the fact that hes my favorite and he gave birth to Isabel). A different nurse came bustling in, checked me and said "oh my goodness do NOT push the baby is RIGHT there!" It was so bad that she went running to hurry the doctor up leaving my MOM inbetween my legs just in case my contractions pushed the baby out before they were ready. When the nurse returned she put me in the stirrups still cautioning me not to push...but I could feel a contraction coming on and feel the baby sliding out little by little so I told the nurse "ummm I'm not pushing but a contraction is coming and I can't help the fact that the baby is sliding.." Thankfully right at that point the door opened and in walked Dr. Nelson fully scrubbed up and ready to go...and right behind him was Dr. Nix..at first she started to get ready to take his place but he waved her away telling her that he wanted to deliver for me. He got into postion and started telling me to push at 1:38...I pushed three times and the baby was out his birth time being EXACTLY 1:40 pm.

Just like with Isabel his umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck but Dr. Nelson was able to get it off eaisly. He then asked everyone in attendance who wanted to cut the umbilical cord...John CANNOT handle blood so it ended up being my mom that cut his umbilical cord. I ended up having to get 5 stitches and Talon's temperature was down so it was a long time before I got to hold him and no one else got to that afternoon because they wanted him to stay wrapped up in the blankets with me. But other than that my little boy was PERFECT...he weighed 7 pounds 8 ounces, was 20 1/2 inches long, had all his fingers and toes, a head full of hair and looks exactly like his father. I love my little boy so very much, I just couldn't be happier.

Right now it is the 18th, the day after Talon's birth and I am currently sitting in the hospital bed. Talon is currently in the nursery sleeping off a one hour lunch (I'm breast feeding). They are going to make us stay another night at least because his blood type is different than mine which raises his chances of getting jaundice but other than that the pediatrician said that he seemed absolutely perfect They are going to circumsize him in the morning poor little thing, but its absolutely nessecary for him and he'll be alright...other than that I don't think he has anymore horrible poking and prodding to worry about until they give him his hepatitis B shot right before we take him home.

Anyway everyone has behaved for the most part since he was born. My little sister decided to pull a fast one on us which I wasn't to happy about. See I allowed her to be in the room while I was giving birth, shes 15 years old, "engaged" to a 16 year old boy who has already been in YDC like 10 times and has lost all his front teeth from drug use. She is also in the state of mind that she knows everything about life, including who she wants to give her V-card to...I was hoping that seeing what giving birth is really like might make her think a bit differently. Instead after Talon was born she hid off with her cell phone, texted the boy and had him come to the hospital. Now don't get me wrong I wouldn't have minded her bringing him with her during visitation but I had just given birth...I was tired, hurting and mostly naked...the last thing I wanted was a strange 16 year old boy hanging all over my little sister and staring at me..you know what I mean? And believe you me the entire time they were here they were ALL OVER each other..to the point that it was almost disgusting. THEN after they left John's brother Jason, his fiancee Kristi and her sister Felicia showed up....Kristi's mom had to have surgery the same day I had Talon and ended up being in the recovery room right across the hall from me. Anyway as I've explained already I believe Jason and Kristi now live with us because they had a falling out with my father in law James. So it was just my luck that while they were visiting in walk James, Lisa and Mawmaw Sara. At first things went fine but James just couldn't let things be and soon the little "comments" began until finally I had to tell everyone it was time to feed Talon (even though he'd just eaten) in order to run them all off. Other than those two things however things have gone smoothly...Isabel got to meet Talon in the delivery room at first she very softly patted him on the forehead then reached out and accidentally poked him in the eye. He was fine, in fact he didn't cry or anything but we figured maybe that was enough exposure for the time being. Then in the recovery room Isabel didn't understand why she couldn't crawl all over me and play with me like she usually does which broke her little heart but it was still really great to get to see my little girl..I miss her terribly. They are supposed to be bringing her to see me here in a little while..I'm excited!

Anyway I think I've made this entry long enough for the time being..I'm sorry if I bored you to death but I had to share Until next time I'm outtie...ciao and Blessed Be!

I saw your comment on another user's profile that you were still in your hospital bed after giving birth and I had to come by and say congratulations!!! That's a wonderful story, and I think I'm going to ask my doc. to not give me that medicine that made your contractions start.
