I am atheist.
Not because I want to be "cool" and show off how intelligent I think I am.
Intelligence does not have much to do with faith.
I am atheist because it's the only thing I can believe with certainty.
Even when I was faithful to god, I questioned it all the time, and it felt like a fight to believe it.
Atheism is one simple truth that I do not constantly have to fight to believe.
In fact, I do not ever think of it. I do not speak much of it either. Not because I'm uncomfortable with it, but because it is just a simple thread in the fabric of my life.
I'm not a person who has to "see" something to believe it.
After all, there are plenty of things we don't see that we believe.
I just know that in my heart, I am not guilty; I am not bothered. Life is the very most precious thing we have, for death is nothing. Even if we aren't ever able to get anything done, or even ever be self-actualized, we only get one life. We only get this life to make ourselves, our legacy. We make our own gods. We make our own purpose. And I think that is the most precious gift I could have ever been given. |
