hanging with friends, sports and J Kidd retires

06/05/2013

Since I updated last on Friday, things happened.

Saturday night I went out with John and a friend of his Dave and eventually Dave’s wife joined us. We went to buffalo wild wings and sat on the deck. It was a beautiful night. They had the Bruins game on the tv’s. John isn’t much for sports and especially not hockey. Dave was really really good at describing –telling me what was happening without saying too much. Dave was also keeping me updated on the RedSox game.
Dave was checking his facebook, he said he had not checked it in a few days. He came across a picture of Kat (John’s soon to be x, who is on the cruise with her boyfriend) and noticed she was wearing a sparkly ring. They both said that it looks like an engagement ring. All John keeps saying is “I can’t believe how stupid she can be”

Monday afternoon my father had came into my room and told me he had a story to tell me. I’m not sure what look I had on my face, but he quickly said, it’s a good story.

He works in a city hall…Someone came up to him and asked him if he had a song named Jonathan. He said yes. And she said that she did too. She then asked if he is a counselor. He said yes. She said that she overheard a conversation a few minutes ago in the hall way. (of city hall) Jonathan Alpert worked with my son and he helped him so much. (and a bunch of other praises) He treated him and I am thankful.
(second person in other convo) do you know his father? Allan?
(first person) no, I don’t know him, I only know of him.

My first reaction was…wow. The person who my father was talking to didn’t know who the other people were because the person my father was talking to is new to city hall.
I sure am curious though and you better believe that it made me feel really good.

***
Sheila and Morris is my friend Jody’s parents. (the one I took her and her kids to the Red Sox game a few times this year) Phyllis (the woman who’s family I visited in Florida twice in the last year, and then (another) Lisa are all sisters. Lisa is Rachel-Zach, and Jared’s mother. (Jared is not mentioned in the following story)

Monday afternoon someone had came into my house and mom yells down to me “Jonathan, Rachel is here” I had no idea who she was talking about. A minute later she said it again but said Sheila, Morris and Rachel are here. I went up to the bottom of the steps. She said “I said Rachel is here? I said, I didn’t know which Rachel you meant. Mom said she only knew one Rachel… (I know 5 off the top of my head)

I said hello. Sheila went up stairs and talked to my mom about things including about 3 or 4 different things she had baked for us. Morris, who is suffering from Altimers, was standing by the front door and Rachel, came down to the bottom steps and had a what are you up to-what are you up to, type conversation. She said that she sees we have a lot of Disney movies. I said that I think we have them all. She said it looks like that. (we have about 40 of them but haven’t got any in a few years) We then got into a conversation about Disney movies. She suggested maybe we could have a Disney marathon sometime. I thought this was a great idea. I love Disney movies.
Sheila had mention that Zach will be at their house tonight, maybe you guys can hang out and watch the game. I said sounds good. Rachel said that she would be there too. I said my byes to them. Well, I had a conversation with Morris first. Just trying to make basic conversation.

A few minutes later I get a FB message from Zach asking if I want to watch the game with him. I said I guess you know your grand parents and sister were here. He said yup, they just called and told me that I should call you to see what’s up. He eventually said he would call me and we would finalize plans for tonight. He did, and said he would pick me up about 7 grab some pizza’s. I said that sounds good.

My mom belongs to the sisterhood of my Temple. Every month the sisterhood meet at various locations. This month it was at my house and so we had about 30 Jewish women , most being in their 70’s +, upstairs in the dining room. Sheila had baked (she says it’s her therapy) and baked she did. So she had to drop it off during the day and asked Rachel to come along to help with bringing them in. So that’s the background of the why.

Zach did pick me up about 7. We went to his grandparents house and picked up the pizza along the way. I had split a pepperoni-cheese pizza with her and Morris had one slice, he already ate. Zach had a late lunch so he didn’t eat anything but he did have a lot of junk food the rest of the night. Zach asked Rachel “you don’t eat pepperoni pizza?” she said she does on rare occasions. Zach said “you use to eat it with dad.” Their father had passed away about 7 years ago. The funeral was the first time I had met this generation of the family.

Rachel and I had some more small talk along with Zach complaining about a sun burn he had and with trying to keep Morris somewhat in the conversation or rather, he would be making sure the conversation was about him some of the time. I was and I’m sure Rachel and Zach were too, shocked that Morris had said that he remembered being at the park with me. Zach said no no, that wasn’t him grandpa. I said yes it was, last year when we went to Amanda’s football game. Morris responded positively and said there were 5 other guys there too. Zach said that he was one of them. Morris goes “you were?” So we were closing in on 8pm when the game would start so we moved into the TV room. Originally Rachel was going to take Morris up stairs so he could watch basketball and Rachel could do work but Morris ended up staying with us, and Rachel had Zach’s laptop so she did her work on there. Zach was flipping through the games, giving me some play-by-play, sometimes waay too much and I told him.
The Bruins scored 28 seconds into the game and I threw my hands in the air and scream and Zach screamed as well. Morris said “please hush” Zach said he didn’t like loud noises. We got another 2 more goals before the Penguins finally got a goal with about 90 seconds to go and a minute later, the Bruin’s get another goal to go up 4-1 in intermission..

After the second period, Zach and I went and got ice cream-slush and brought it back to the house. Rachel didn’t want anything. I had ice-cream and Zach had a slush.
Zach had turned the AC off and opened the windows cause it was nice outside. They had told me the story of Rachel waking up and over sleeping and only leaving herself 10 minutes to get ready when she says it usually takes her about an hour to get ready. Zach says it only takes him about 15 minutes to get ready. I turned to Zach and said “what? You didn’t beautify yourself?” he said no, not today.
Eventually Sheila came home. Rachel went up to Bed. Sheila took Morris up so he could go to sleep. She came back and Sheila is the biggest sports fan I know who is in her age bracket. She asked how the Bruins are doing and then commented on the red sox taking two of 3 from the Yankees over the weekend.

Sheila had brought up Rachel oversleeping. She said that she figured that she was already up and showered when she got up. Zach figured she was getting dressed. Sheila said “I don’t understand why Rachel needs to take a shower at night then again in the morning. You go in bed and sleep. It’s not like you sweat at all. We have the AC on. There is no need for her to take a shower again in the morning.”
Poor Rachel.

In the 3rd period of the game, the Bruins score two more goals, one with not much time left. The final was Boston 6 Pittsburg 1. We couldn’t believe Boston won twice in Pittsburg shutting down a team that averaged 4.5 goals a game. These two games they scored 1 goal combined.
GO BOSTON BRUINS!

My Red Sox beat the Yankees 2 games to 1 We’re up 2 games in the standings.

Tuesday night (I started writing this entry Tues morning... I wouldnt normally update on a regular season game...but
Tuesday night the Red Sox opened a 3 game series in Boston with the Texas Rangers.
The Red Sox crushed, whipped, spanked, and anything else a mistress would do to her sub, we did to the Rangers. The final was 17-5 and since the Red Sox were the home team, they didnt even get to bat in the 9th inning.
It got so bad, the Rangers had their left fielder pitch the 8th inning. He only gave up one hit and no runs. The crazy thing about it? it was the first and only inning the Red Sox did not score.
The Red Sox had 19 hits, including 4 home runs, 6 doubles and a tripple from the most unlikeliest of players, "big papi" David Ortiz.

The Boston Bruins are crushing the Penguins on the ice. We’re up 2 game to 0 for the rights to go to the Stanley cup final and it’s not even close.
Game #1 Bos 3 Pits 0 game #2 Bos 6 Pen 1

In the west finals, Chicago is up on LA 2-1.

In basketball
San Antonio will be playing Miami for the championship

My favorite basketball player, Jason Kidd, retired after 19 years, leading his team to the playoff 17 of those years and has 1 championship and 2 Olympic gold mettles as well as numerous statistical categories that he’s in the top 3 of including assist, steals and triple doubles. Probably the most impressive thing is every time he moved to a new team, that team improved from the previous year by at least 14 wins.

I started watching Jason Kidd when he was in HIGH SCHOOL. yes, high school.
Every year ESPN shows the high school all american game. I watched it in 1990 and 91 and this player, who didnt score much, was looking to get others to score and had a bunch of assist. He also rebounded balls too. I didnt know many point guards who did this. I thought that he was awesome. His name was Jason Kidd. One night the following year I was watching a college basketball game, I believe it was UCLA vs Cal State Golden Bears. I heard the name Kidd again and he was a point guard so I figured out it was the same player. I followed his 2 year college career and he came out and was drafted #2 over all to the Dallas Mavericks.

Amazingly, I was able to attend at least one game every year that he played in the league. Some years it was really really dificult because his team would only play in Boston once but when ever that once a year was, I was there.

A really cool story...
I must have mentioned -talked about how Jason Kidd would be my "next" favorite player before his rookie season. My friend Sidney and his brother Howard were in Dallas the first weekend of November of 1994 to see a Dallas Cowboy game. Sid is a HUGE Cowboys fan. While they were down their, they decided to get tickets for the opening night of the Dallas Mavericks season. ... Sid came over to my house a few days later and told me he had a gift for me. I was excited cause I figured it was sports related. He handed me a box. (this was back when I had some vission) There was a towel that on half of it had the Dallas Mavs symble and the other half the NJ nets. Centered at the top it said the date and said oopening night. I was shocked. Then was the booklet from that night's game and lately... lately was a Jason Kidd Dallas Mav #5 Jersey. I put it on and it was HUGE on me but I would grow into it. I was so excited.
19.5 years later, I still have the towel, booklet and jersey.

I'll see you in Springfield in 5 years Kidd

RYC: we are enjoying it. It's just causing Noah all kinds of issues. Hopefully we figure it out. The medical care here is top notch which we love. So I do enjoy MA. Just hate the traffic
