Hello all, just a quick update
Tomorrow’s my grand father’s 94th b day. We all selebrated on Sunday because we could all get together. We had Chinese food because my grand father loves it, my nanna doesn’t and so he never gets it and since it was his birthday, he got Chinese food. (and so did I )My grandparents could not get over how old they are. It was a running joke of sort through the evening. My grand father would say I can’t believe I’m 92. Someone would say “you’re 94” my nanna, who wants to believe she is much younger, she never wants to believe she is “old” side story. When my father put my grand parents in the assistive living, my nanna would say “I don’t want to live there. They are all old people, mean while, they would be the oldest residents. So she never wants to bring up her age. So she said jokingly I’m not 90 yet, I’m in my 80’s. my mom goes “you have a son who will be 63”… you are 92. She turned to my grand father and said “did you hear that, I’m 90” my mom goes “92” my nannasays in a sharp tone “stop that!” we all laughed. J
We all bought cards. When you are 94, cards are all you need and all you want.
We had a birthday cake and sang happy birthday to him and that was really it. It was a nice time.
I have a friend who has a 12 year old son who has aspburger’s syndrome. It is a disorder that’s on the autism scale but is very high functioning. She is very active in his schooling and and his activities. He’s in the special Olympics and he does karati.
My friend, Jody, is on this board at his school called “D.A.S.H.” “disability, awareness, starts here”
It is a great program that informs both parents and students about disabilities and not to be afrade of them. Well, Jody asked me if I would speak to the children some time. I said I would. She asked if I could come to observe the parent part, so I can get an idea of what it is all about. So I went yesterday with Jody and it was like a blast from the past. I had run or taken part in many disability awareness days at schools. They had a station set up for various disabilities. The head of the board spoke to the parents first and then the parents got to rome around the caf, where the board members were manning the various stations. I thought it was funny when Jody was trying to tell me things they do and how to do it and why they do things and I was like I know I know I know…but I didn’t say say that lol. Then she was telling me about how they explain the various things to the children on the days they have the specific programs. It’s all quite interesting that they have this as they didn’t have anything like this when I was in school. My world would have been a lot more different if they did. So when all the parents had left, I did a little demonstration about my computer and I brought a speak baseball schedule I have that’s in Braille. They are excited that I will be speaking and they warned me about some of the questions I’ll get. I answered all their questions and I told them not to worry, I will make sure the children are comfortable.
The last blind guy they had was an older guy who had a guide dog and he wore a suit and tie, and the children were intimidated by him and wouldn’t ask many questions. So they told me to wear something the children can relate to. I said, can I wear my David Ortiz (red sox player) jersey? They said that would be perfect.
So I’ll tentatively be speaking to the 2nd granders on Friday, April 27th. And another cool part of this… I’ll get paid for it. And apparently my agent, (my friend Jody) says she’s going to put in for $150!!! For an hour! They usually pay 100 but since I have degrees I guess? I’m worth more. The sad thing, that is almost how much I make in a month at my job after taxes.
While I was writing this, I thought hmmm my second grad thesis I wrote was on teacher’s knowledge of students with physicle disabilities. I sent Jody an email. Thanking her for including me and sharing with her my thesis. I figured she would be interested in it.
Hmm ok, that was long enough for a short update lol
Hope everyone has a peachy day
