LET'S GET NAPPI!

ok, tomorrow (monday) is finally here and I am very nervous.

I will be training 20 fellow members of my company how to do two sections of the NAPPI program. (the training I did over the summer to become a NAPPI trainer for my company)

NAPPI stands for Non Abusive Psychological and Physical Intervention

This training teaches you how to identify what level of behavior they're on. How to decrease their level of anxiety. How to talk to them if you would like them to do something or to stop doing something. How to inritch their lives and how to deal with a client if they are "anxious" "disruptive" "distructive" "leathael"

I have 4 parts. Monday I will be teaching the "SMART" scale. and doing the review at the end of the day. Tuesday i will be doing the "green behavior scale" and then the review at the end of the day before they take the test.

SMART

S: staying one step ahead
knowing your client's history, being aware of your suroundings, if there are any objects that can be used as weapons. Making a plan and letting the clients know what your plan is for the day as well as saying "hi" and "bye" to them every day and letting them know when you will be back.

M: move one step at a time.
With people who have cognitive issues, requesting something slowly is still too fast. You have to do one, Step, At, A, Time. If not, the client may become confused and either refuse to do something or they'll forget something you asked them to do.

A: always making it safer.
Is what I am going to do next safer than what I am doing now. If I have a new client and he has to make dinner for the group home, you should monitor them. If you hand them a sharp knife and tell them to cut veggies up, you will be down stairs, it could lead to ... who knows.

R: refocus attention while staying safe.
Caling their name, getting in their line of site, giving them a different task to do. Change the counselor, the room or activity.

T: together with TLC.
TLC in NAPPI stands for respecting everyone while staying safe.
Talk to coworkers frequently, especially when changing shifts. Letting them know if there are any change in behavior. If a coworker is having a bad day or maybe has a headache, give them a break or tell them to relax in an other room till you feel better.

The last thing, (part of the together with tlc) Use the minimum impact consept. Using the least amount of force needed. If a client is just yelling. You are not going to put them in a 5 point restrant. You will start by talking to them in a calm voice. It is easier to become more impactful if needed than it is to back off.

and that my friends... I have 15 minutes to teach with no notes.
(although my coworkers will have note cards. I have to do it all by memory)
