If you remember, (and if you dont, you can reread my last entry) my dad read me an article in a Boston News paper written last week by a revered conservitive writer, Howie Carr.
In general, the state of Massachusetts is using some of the stimulus money to help under pliveraged teens to make it easier to get a job. In Howie Carr's words A pregnant, high school drop out, criminal who can not speak english is getting a better chance to get a job than an egle scout.
MY OPINION
First, what people seems to have forgotten, unless you are a full blooded Native American, we are all imagrants.
Secondly, this is part of the welfare system. So these are kids who could use the jobs to help their self or their parent-parents support the family.
Thirdly: There is statistics that shows that if you are involved in extra activities, I.E. play sports, in school clubs or have a job, you are less likely to do drugs, get pregnant or become a dropout.
forthly: Having a job can teach a teen some skills and responsibilities that maybe their parent-parents are not able to.
Do people take advantage of the system?
Sure, I have had clients who came to America just because they knew they could get free health care and housing and they don't have to do anything.
I personally knew a woman who kept having kids because she knew that the state would give her more money that she can spend on herself.
I have a client currently who has a 4 year old daughter, just got a woman pregnant and within a month, dropped her and is hooking up with another woman. He knows the system will take care of it.
I also knew it in college who was wrongly convicted for something, and now that he has it on his record, he can not get a job that he studied hard to prepare him for.
I have a former coworker who is from Mexico who works very hard to support his 9 year old son and 1 year old daughter while his x is sitting in her mom's house messing around and just collecting.
I feel that as long as you are working, going to school and bettering yourself and your family, you should recieve help. Let's give these kids things to do to keep them off the streets, away from drugs and alcohol and too young parenthood.
