Happy Easter, Happy Passover and ... HAPPY OPENING NIGHT TO BASEBALL!
Opening Night, 2010
4-4-2010
Jonathan
(Originally started this over a month ago. Little did I know then that I’d be going to opening night with my friend Jeff S)
Opening night, 2010
There was a big crowd, jammed into the Fen’s
The air was cool, the sun was going down
It was electric in town
The stars came out that night
Dane Cook, Mark and Donny Wallburg and Jordan Knight
Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Stephen King
The Yankees came calling with their newly minted rings
The Red Sox were ready to start the new season
39,000 wicked rowdy fans had their reasons
Spring is a time for optimism, a time of rejuvenation
Opening day brings excitement and hope, hope across the entire Red Sox nation
Old familiar faces, some new names on the roster
Everyone is given a tabula rasa
Taking a seat next to my good friend Katie Casey
I take in the surrounding around me
Many families, with their new souvenirs
There are some large groups, Cub Scout pack 60 is over there
I can smell the freshly cut grass and someone’s beer
I see some new advertisements are here
A chant of “Yankees suck! Let’s go Red Sox!” sweet music to my ears
Katie has her scorebook, ready to write down the player’s names
I pull out my scorebook, ready to do the same
One by one, they are called out to the field
An army of men, without their shields
Starting with the bat boy and ending with the starting nine
It’s national anthem time
Fenway Park, stands as one
Taking my hat off, respecting your country should always be done
Singing the anthem is Boston’s own
Stephen Tyler of Aerosmith. He’s alone
…And the home, of the, brave!
A little boy shouts out “play ball!” As the rode is paved
I take my seat, waiting excitedly for the season to begin
Beckett takes the mound, all I can do is grin
Warming up, throwing to Victor Martinez
I hear an old man behind me praying to Jesus
The rest of the defense is lead on to the field
Ellsburry, Camrron and JD Drew take their places in the outfield
An all new left side with Beltre at third and Scutaro at short
Youkilis takes first and Pedroia at second, He’s so short
Excuse me now as I put down my paper and pen
Let me just say…
LET’S GO RED SOX! AND THE 99TH YEAR AT THE FENS!
