Baby Nutrition Information

09/11/2009

I've posted a summary of important nutrition information for infants.

It includes a simple list of "do"s and "don't do"s such as -

• NO cow’s milk before 12 months
• Soy milk does NOT have enough nutrients for infant. When unable to breast feed, use infant-formula

For the rest, go to:

It also include links to more detailed information from reliable sources.

Infant formula has ingredients in it that milk has in it. Whey protein, to name one. There are babies who cannot breastfeed, nor can they drink "regular" formula. Therefore soy formula needs to be used.

There's a chance (however small it may be) of anemia if a newborn drinks cow's milk. Despite having one same property (whey as you've mentioned), human milk and cow's milk is not the same. The best option generally speaking is breast-feeding. Some baby formula may contain soy, but that is not the same as feeding them soy milk for adults from the supermarket. Feeding only that type of soy milk will lead to malnutrition for the baby - which may have long term health consequences. I do know that breastfeeding is not an option (such as if the mother must be on certain medication), but I do not know of any cases where the baby cannot (looking strictly from the medical/health perspective) take human milk and cannot take baby formula. I emphasize the words "medical/health perspective" because I understand the actual practice of breastfeeding such as for working mothers is difficult.

Also, I highly recommend you go to http://spirfit.blogspot.com/2009/09/nutrition-and-health-info-for-your.html and it will clarify things. If it doesn't, there are links to even more authoritative sources than me. (BTW, I have a nutrition science degree from UCDavis and I teach general nutrition seminars, although I don't practice clinically and I don't specialize in infant nutrition, which is why I include the links to more authoritative sources. I recommend getting the facts there rather than arguing, especially if you have a baby - for its wellbeing. God bless.
