No Sweets and $2200

05/07/2011

Anything sweet causes pain on my tooth which turns into a nagging headache on the right side of my head.  I can't believe I have to spend $2200 for a root canal.

Well, life could be worse.  Back in 2003 and 2004, it was a lot worse.  I had the worst medical crisis in my life back then.  Looking at this in perspective, that medical crisis back then was an ocean of problems.  This dental problem is a puddle in comparison.

By the way, I totally can't afford $2200. I have to borrow it from my SpirFit Organization. (The SpirFit Organization is a nonprofit organization I've been building and putting most of my money in.)

why $2200? That sounds a bit outrageous.. dentists in the area where I live, it's around $900. I need 2 canals myself.. and even with my insurance, they're $300 a piece.. unfortunately I cant even afford that right now.. lol

Well, it depends on the tooth. Also, I am also wondering if your dentist told you about the entire cost. For example, a root canal on an incisor (one of the front teeth) could cost $300 but the crown, material to fill the root canal, and other materials may cost another $300.

Also, if you need it done, you should get it done as soon as possible. If you delay (for weeks or months), it will get more expensive, complicated, and painful. (You don't want the infection to spread to your bone and other parts.) If so, they will have to pull your tooth and oral surgery may be necessary which is even more costly.

As for my case, I need the root canal on my molar (one of the bigger teeth in the back of the mouth and also the most expensive ones to do a root canal). You are right in that the price still seem outrageous. I checked around and it should be around $800 for the root canal + another $800 for materials which totals to $1600. However, the more experienced doctors also charge more. That maybe why my dentist is charging so much, because he has a very good reputation and has been practicing since 1978.

But I am still checking around for other dentists who may be just as good or good enough without costing that much. However, I am trying my best to schedule for the root canal within a week. I don't want the tooth to get worse (and get more expensive). Also, while I am checking around and delaying for a week, I am brushing and using an oral rinse to kill germs at least three times a day and sometimes more often. I am taking a lot longer doing the oral rinse than usual. I'm doing this to prevent the spread of infection in the cavity of that tooth. I'm also taking ibuprofen to fight the inflammation.

Also, if you suspect that your dentist is recommending unnecessary work, go see another dentist for a second opinion. It is possible for unethical dentists to recommend a root canal or other work that isn't necessary.
