What Does This Mean?

04/23/2011

The following is a message I received from a member of a church I used to attend.  Back then, I had taught Sunday school, I had led small groups, and had guided some individuals there.  I had done so unofficially.  I was recognized somewhat as a defacto teacher at that church, but I left in 2007.

Here's the message:

Hi ___,

I was wondering if you are currently attending any church? I know how you feel about churches, but our church is kind of rebuilding out English Congregation.

Many people have left, Minister Sam is leaving, we need to look for a new English Minister/Pastor and we're trying to make a few changes.

If you're not attending any church, would you like to come back and rebuild the church with us?

We're going to have a meeting on May 1st after the chinese service to talk about what we want to do with the ENglish Congregation. If you think you might want to come back and you want to join our meeting, please let me know. I will e-mail you the minutes from our meeting to fill you in a bit about what changes we might want to make.

Hope to hear from you soon!

XYZ

God, please let me know what you want me to do.  From what I am sensing right now, I am leaning toward "no".  However, "not my will, but yours."

I am going to send her back a message asking her why Minister Sam is leaving.  Also, I am going to ask her if it's only her idea to ask me to come back, or are others requesting my return?  If it's only her, then the answer from God would be very clear "no".

Why if it's only her would it be a no, if you don't mind my asking?

In response to both comments, here's why it's a clear "no" if it's only her. When I was with that church, some leaders there value my work and contribution to the church but some of them gave me a lot of resistance in my efforts. What I am getting at is that if she is the only one who wants me back to help, I am pretty certain that other leaders and members of the church will give me resistance. If that's the case, I don't believe God wants me back there. If God wanted me there to have my efforts stifled, He would not have led me away in the first place.

Also God gave me a recent experience in my side job preceding this that seems to be his guidance in making this decision with that church. My side job is at a city college and one of the directors want me to fill this position in a new program, but he is the only one of the three people who is in charge of making that decision. He wants me because I currently work for him and he knows my performance. The other two do not know me and they somehow already have an impression that they don't want me to build that program. Obviously, if only one person wants you, it's not going to work. It seems to me that God is using that recent incident at work to show me what to do with this incident with that church.

In response to Estella about how I could use that as an indicator of God wanting me to go back, that's actually not what I am doing. Rather, I am only using that as an indicator of God not wanting me to go back. Here's another way of putting it. Although it's a "no" if it's only her, I am not simply going to believe that it's an automatic "yes" if more than one person wants me back. I hope I haven' confused you.

If you were obviously doing something good, I think it's silly that they would resist something positive.

They resist because I don't do things the conventional but I am usually effective. Some people are very accustomed to doing things the way they've always been done, and resist against anything different (even if doing things the same way isn't reaping results).

That sounds a lot like all the kids at my elementary school, growing up. Heaven forbid some kid comes off a commune!

If it is God who wants you to go back, why would that imply that more than one person wants you back? In the Bible God often sent people to places where people didn't want them! I mean, from an ego point of view, it would be nice if several people were wanting you to come back, but I don't see how you could use that as a measure of whether God wanted you back.
