Current bugs in Bloop and

12/13/2008

Hi Bloopers,

Just so everybody knows, the free trial of Xtra has expired. I did extend it a little longer, but Bloop can't survive financially without advertisements and so I couldn't justify extending it more. Once Bloop is back on its feet, hopefully I'll be able to offer a whole uninterrupted month.

For those of you with expired subscriptions, you have seven days before BloopXtra is actually removed from your account. Beyond that it'll disappear and you won't be bothered by any system messages.

Many people are questioning the current layout Bloop is using. I realise it is buggy, and I'm working to resolve the bugs. One of the problems is that Bloop never used to make use of CSS code, but now it does. I'm trying to reduce the load on the server and improve standards compatibility. As a side effect, some layouts are not working properly because the CSS code clashes with what I have written.

I am working to resolve the issue. I plan to integrate code that will read the CSS in entry layouts and remove colliding CSS appropriately from Bloop's CSS, which will hopefully allow those entries to continue. The aim isn't to restrict your ability to customise your diary, but rather help Bloop become compatible with more browsers and be more disabled friendly. (text readers didn't like Bloop...)

Speaking of disabled people, I am also planning on adding an option that strips pages of HTML tags and CSS. If you're blind and you have to use a text reader, this is of no use whatsoever. I know that some people have asked for a feature like this before, so look for it in the coming weeks.

Recently, you may have noticed that you were asked to provide your country of residence. Don't worry, I'm just asking because I'm trying to personalise the site more. If you're in the US or Canada, you probably don't like the U in favoUrites. So I've removed it for you.

I've also created localised versions of Bloop in case you want to read people living in your country. These are accessible via the toolbar, or if you browse to the bottom of the page there are four links to the different versions of Bloop.

And that's about all I have to say for now.

If you want to help with our financial woes, please feel free to buy yourself an Xtra subscription or give a gift to a friend this Christmas.

Thanks for sticking with us.

Steve.

canadians still spell it with the U.

[seasongsterStar|0 likes] [|reply]

You're doing a great job Steve, even with PUCK trying to break everything

[K I R AStar|0 likes] [|reply]

Umm, yeah, Canadians spell "Favourite" with a U...
It's really been bugging me lately why it doesn't have the U in it...

[serendipity.Star|0 likes] [|reply]

I REMEMBER BACK IN THE DAY, THE SPELLINGS WOULD CHANGE DEPENDING ON YOUR COUNTRY, YO! WELL, IT WAS DONE ACCORDING TO YOUR TIMEZONE, I BELIEVE. LIKE IT COULD BE 'DEVISUALISE' OR 'DEVISUALIZE'. BUT ACTUALLY, I THINK 'DEVISUALISE' DIDN'T CHANGE - IT WAS ONLY 'FAVOURITES/FAVORITES' THAT CHANGED. BECAUSE I TOTALLY TRIED CHANGING IT TO MAKE IT SAY 'DEVISUALIZE' WITH A Z, BUT THE 'S' REMAINED.

AND CANADIANS DO NOT ALL SPELL 'FAVOURITES' WITH A 'U'. WHEN I LIVED IN CANADA, PEOPLE THERE TOLD ME THAT THEY USED BRITISH SPELLINGS, BUT IN REALITY, THEY TENDED TO USE AMERICAN SPELLINGS (AND OFTEN WERE NOT FULLY AWARE OF THE DIFFERENCE). I THINK THERE IS NOT A STANDARDISED SPELLING SYSTEM IN CANADA - IT SEEMS TO BE A HODGEPODGE OF BRITISH AND AMERICAN, WHERE PEOPLE MOSTLY USE AMERICAN SPELLINGS, BUT MOSTLY SAY THEY USE BRITISH SPELLINGS. MOST CONFUSING FOR POOR ESTELLA, YO! LIKE I TRIED USING BRITISH SPELLINGS IN MY ESSAYS AND THEY GOT CORRECTED!

GOSH, CHEEKY K I R A, YO! THE GREAT PUCK HASN'T BROKEN ANYTHING!

WHAT IS BUGGING SERENDIPITY? THE 'U' IS STILL THERE, YO! IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN!

[PUCKStar|0 likes] [|reply]

Wow, I've seen it as "favourites" so long, that I didn't even notice it didn't have the "u" in it on the sidebar anymore. Hmft.

Thanks for updating us!

[Lauren.Star|0 likes] [|reply]

OOH - SERENDIPITY IS IMMORTALIZED ARTISTE. SEE, IF SHE WAS USING BRITISH SPELLINGS, SHE WOULD BE 'IMMORTALISED ARTISTE'. WITH AN 'S', YO! SEE HOW CONFUSING IT GETS!

[PUCKStar|0 likes] [|reply]

OOH - I SEE WHY THE 'U' HAS GONE FOR SOME PEOPLE. THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEY CHOOSE THEIR COUNTRY OF RESIDENCE. I GET IT NOW, YO! DID YOU CHANGE 'DE-VISUALISE' TO 'DE-VISUALIZE' FOR THOSE PPLZ, YO? I THINK THE 'Z' IS MAYBE MORE A CANADIAN THING AS WELL AS AN AMERICAN THING, BUT THE 'U' ISN'T SO MUCH?

[PUCKStar|0 likes] [|reply]

I FOUND THE ROOLZ ON WIKIPEDIA, YO - SOURCE OF ALL KNOWLEDGE!

Canadian spelling of the English language combines British and American rules. Most notably, French-derived words that in American English end with -or and -er, such as color or center, usually retain British spellings (colour, honour and centre), although American spellings are not uncommon. Also, while the United States uses the Anglo-French spelling defense (noun), Canada uses the British spelling defence. (Note that defensive is universal.) In other cases, Canadians and Americans differ from British spelling, such as in the case of nouns like tire and curb, which in British English are spelled tyre and kerb. Words such as realize and recognize are usually spelled with -ize rather than -ise, but nouns take the -ice while verbs take the -ise, compare practice and practise. Note also the distinction between prophecy and prophesy [10] (The etymological convention that verbs derived from Greek roots are spelled with -ize and those from Latin with -ise is preserved in that practice.[11]) Canadian spelling also retains the British practice of doubling the final consonant before adding suffixes to words that have a final single consonant preceded by a vowel, when they are at the end of a stressed syllable. Compare travelled, counselling and controllable, but woolen, balloted, and profiting. [10]

SEE, YO. I AM RIGHT. SO WHEN PEOPLE CHOOSE 'CANADA' THEY MUST HAVE 'FAVOURITES' BUT 'DEVISUALIZE'. WHEREAS AMERICANS GET 'FAVORITES' AND 'DEVISUALIZE'. AND BRITS AND AUSSIES AND KIWIS GET 'FAVOURITES' AND 'DEVISUALISE'.

[PUCKStar|0 likes] [|reply]

YOU SHOULD ALSO MAKE AN OPTION FOR PEOPLE WHO CAN'T SPELL - LIKE THEY COULD GET 'FAYVRITTS' AND 'DEVISHOOLIZE'.

[PUCKStar|0 likes] [|reply]

hmm..thanks

[TX_MaMa02Star|0 likes] [|reply]

I can assure you that Canadians use the U in favourite, colour, honour, etc...
We may use the "z" in some instances, but we always always use the U in those words. If you set your word processor to Canadian spelling, it will always show up favorite as wrong.
I'm sure I sounded bitchy earlier (I'm positive of it... [in serendipity]) but I had literally just woken up and was tired/bitchy/etc. hahahah.

Anyway. I'm positive (since I've lived here for my entire life) that Canada does not use favorite.
And yeah, we use some American spellings... immortalized... even though I have kinda adopted using the "s" (because of Teresa!) haha. But I won't change immortalized. Looks better. haha

[immortalized artisteStar|0 likes] [|reply]

Oh, and by the wayyy, I don't know if this is just my boyfriend's computer... but I have tried three browsers (Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari) and I was only able to sign in on Safari.
The other two bring me to the Welcome page and then back to the main page where I'm not logged in

[immortalized artisteStar|0 likes] [|reply]

YES, YO, JESSA - SEE WHAT I QUOTED FROM WIKIPEDIA. IT SAYS THE SAME THING, AND IT GIVES THE ETYMOLOGICAL REASONS, SO IT IS VERY INTERESTING, YO. YOU GUYS USE THE 'U', BECAUSE OF THE FRENCH ROOTS, BUT YOU USE THE 'Z' FOR THE GREEK ROOTS.

ALTHOUGH, AS WIKIPEDIA SAYS, IT'S NOT UNIFORM IN CANADA - THERE ARE SOME WHO DO USE AMERICAN SPELLINGS IN EVERYTHING, AND IT'S ACCEPTED (BECAUSE OF THE NAUGHTY POWERZ OF THE USA WHO LIVE UNDERNEATH YOU, YO!) SO YOU SEE IT GETS CONFUSING. BUT YOU USE THE 'U', I NOTICE (BECAUSE I TOTALLY WENT TO YOUR DIARY TO SEE, AND YOU SPELT 'COLOUR' WITH THE 'U', YO!).

[PUCKStar|0 likes] [|reply]

steve, in canada we spell favourites with a U! lol So now im all confused since favorite is spelt wrong for us!

[May.9th.2009Star|0 likes] [|reply]

i believe in Canada

favoUrites is correct, and so is coloUrs

buttttt thanks for all the hard work you've been putting in!

[KASIA`.Star|0 likes] [|reply]

wooo! Team Bloop!

[StaRRyEyDSupRizStar|0 likes] [|reply]

I concur with Jessa!

We definitely always have the "u" in "favourite". Spelling it without the "u" just looks weird to me! Haha.

[//movielayouts//Star|0 likes] [|reply]

Is this why the background on my FP and EL is dark blue and not black like it shoud be?

[Love, RebekahStar|0 likes] [|reply]

i'm canadian, and i love the 'u' in favourites. we spell nearly everything "brit-style". please put it back? i really miss it actually.

[girlsetsfireStar|0 likes] [|reply]

i totally miss my U, yo!
hahaha.
take care.

[[mandie knickers]™Star|0 likes] [|reply]

Praise you. =D

The option that strips pages of HTML and CSS - does that go beyond just devisualising the page? It sounds really useful. =)

YAY my 'u' in 'favourites' is back!! (And I love how this entry has spurred a spelling discussion!)

[lithium layouts.Star|0 likes] [|reply]

could you put the "U" back into my words? i like it better that way, :[

[jodiStar|0 likes] [|reply]

haha i noticed the favorites spelling changed!

that's a great idea about having the site accessible & easy to use for the disabled

[.x.bound.x.Star|0 likes] [|reply]

Thanks for all the hard work Steve!

It's kind of funny, I'm so used to the "U" in "favourites" on the menu that now it feels wrong even though I'm American

Ah well. Don't change a thing for my sake, I'll take Bloop any way, as long as it's alive!

[JaimeStar|0 likes] [|reply]

I miss the u.

[Cherry Seven ExtrasStar|0 likes] [|reply]

You sir, are the shit.

[some miscreant.Star|0 likes] [|reply]

I just noticed that there's a "u" in favourites on Bloop! I LOVE THAT!!!

(Gosh... it has taken me like 4 years to notice that.. Wow...)

I really must check out this Bloop Intl. thing - I keep noticing it in my toolbar

Anyway... You're doing an absolutely AMAZING job, Steve! ♥

GET SOME REST THIS HOLIDAY!!! Happy Christmas!!!

OOH! "Bloop UK"! FTW

[Harley QuinnStar|0 likes] [|reply]

Love you steve thank you for everything

[stickbug7Star|0 likes] [|reply]

Dunno where we're supposed to let you know about bugs still so I'll leave a comment here and hope someone sees it:

When you try to delete a comment on someone's diary it says "cannot find the page you requested" but if you hit the back button and refresh, the comment is deleted.

[Sunlight SilenceStar|0 likes] [|reply]

awww.. i'm american but i really like that "u"

[deus solusStar|0 likes] [|reply]

Steve, you're the best.

I love the American English spelling changes

[Beautiful LiesStar|0 likes] [|reply]

YEAH, what's up with the whole removing my U thing??? Humft! First of all, I picked Brazil, so Steve, why have you not translated my whole Bloop to PORTUGUESE?? HUH?? Okay, I suppose Brazil fits under your "international", I accept (prefer, but shh, that's not the point), BUT why must it be american spelling?? WHY??! I have my own way of spelling english words where I mix british with american! (Hmm, maybe I've always been Canadian?) I want to pick my own way!

Okay, so this comment wasnt realllllly seriious, there are much bigger things I wish would get fixed around here, but I sure do miss that U!

~

[internationalStar|0 likes] [|reply]

steve - i LOVE the new changes to the tool bar. I know I've said I love the tool bar before when it first showed up - but being able to see who the comments and updated fav's are just by hovering over it - is SO freaking cool. that alone is worth the "crash" as silly as that sounds. lol

[Meghans FollieStar|0 likes] [|reply]

hi... just thought i'd mention that whenever i come to the site, the main page is like. blank. it has the menu and bloop logo at the top but thats it. i have to click over to forums to log in and then i'm able to get to the main page. i don't have much computer access so i'm not sure if you've actually mentioned this yet in bloopnews or if i'm the only one who has the problem, even though i use more than one computer source. *shrug* just putting it out there.

[*~Tears.Of.Rain~*Star|0 likes] [|reply]

CLEARLY YOU SHOULD PUT THE 'U' BACK FOR EVERYONE! LIKE, EVEN FOR THE AMERICANS, IT ADDS A QUAINT BRITISHNESS TO THE SITE, YO! IT'S WHAT MAKES BLOOP BLOOP! (AND, LIKE, YOU DON'T SEE OPEN DIARY MAKING IT SAY 'FAVOURITES' FOR THE NON-YANKS, YO! LIKE AMERICAN SITES NEVER MAKE A BRITISH VERSION, SO YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO MAKE AN AMERICAN VERSION!). YOU SHOULD TOTALLY DO A POLL WHERE YOU ASK IF PEOPLE WANT THE 'U' BACK, YO! POOR BLOOP HAS BEEN LACKING ITS POLL!

[PUCKStar|0 likes] [|reply]

^ Oh, I reckon the "u" would win. Hands down. xD

[lithium layouts.Star|0 likes] [|reply]

Steve! In the 'geographical locations' page, I think you should be able to click on a location and see a list of all the diarists (with links to their diaries).

[lithium layouts.Star|0 likes] [|reply]

1- I couldn't raise a ticket for this, sorry. It's telling me to select a department to submit it to, and there are no selection options...
2- I'm trying to create a new diary, and everything is fine until I get to the end of the 'register a new diary' page and enter the confirmation code. Then I get taken back to the same page and am told to enter the confirmation code correctly. I've tried several times, and keep on being told to enter it correctly (and I have been), so it's basically impossible for me (and other people, I presume?) to create a new diary. Helppp? Or is there any other way I can start what is going to be a 'community'-type diary?

[an empty frame.|0 likes] [|reply]

Ummm... Canadians spell everything with a "u" as well... such as favourites, and colour. When it comes to language, we're closer to the U.K. then the U.S.

[kat.x.|0 likes] [|reply]

PUCK HAS SOLVED THE PROBLEM.

HERE IS HOW YOU MUST DO IT.

UK AND AUSTRALIA: FAVOURITES
USA: FAVORITES
BRAZIL: FAVORITOS
NETHERLANDS: GUNSTELINGS
HUNGARY: KEDVENCS
CANADA: FAVOURITES, EH
EMOS: LEAST WORSTS
ESTELLA: FAVOURITES, YO!
