Hello Bloopers,
I was having a conversation with PUCK by comment the other day, when she asked me why New Bloop will be better than Old Bloop.
Here was my reply:
On the creative side, v3 is a blank canvas waiting for some graffiti. I think that the layout will allow for a more versatile personal diary, because Bloop won't be taking up lots of the screen with its own links (that are big and bulky, and somewhat ugly). Bloop's system dialogs will also stay themed even when a custom layout is applied, because all CSS is automatically rewritten to make sure it doesn't interfere with the system's CSS. (One problem with the current Bloop is that font tags often screw up the taskbar.)
On the system side, everything is much more organised - although it probably doesn't appear that way on the front end at the moment because it isn't finished. All the data a diarist uploads (entries, comments, photographs, etc.) is stored in a virtual disk system in the database. The virtual disk system is responsible for permissions - which means enhanced privacy options that work all the time and have a central point for reliability. It also means that downloading a diary is straight forward, because everything is stored inside a virtual folder.
There are other components to v3 that will allow for custom domains - for example, if you own ladypuck.com, v3 would be able to host a copy of your diary there. Although all diaries would be part of the Bloop network, they wouldn't necessarily reside at bloopdiary.com.
Then there's the direction that I want to head in which simply isn't possible with this version. I need to introduce communities to the site, as much as people proclaim to hate cliques, it would seem that people prefer to be part of one. If all of the pregnant ladies could get together in one community called 'The Pregnancy Circle' for example, they could all upload resources that they think are important, and post about their woes and victories throughout their pregnancy, they could even have their own Readers Choice.
Ultimately, instead of a pregnant guest landing on the main page of Bloop which isn't very targeted, they'd land at 'The Pregnancy Circle' which would instantly be more relevant to them.
There's also the fact that this is a complete refresh of 9 year old code from the ground up... frankly, there's a lot I've learned about PHP (that's the language I've been writing it in) and software development in general that will make for a much better product.
You guys can take a sneak peak at v3 over at new.bloopdiary.com.
