჻ೋ჻ There is stuff you can use in your kitchen or pick up at a grocery store that might help for both. Using olive oil as a conditioner on your hair works great, and you can mix it with things like honey, mayonnaise, egg or avocado for extra conditioning. You can leave it on for an hour or overnight, whatever works for you. I use olive oil on my hair a lot and my hair is fantastically shiny. If you are looking for hair growth, nothing will give overnight results. But a good diet with lots of protein and taking biotin vitamins, as well as a daily vitamin can help. Reduce stress, use less harsh hair products, shampoo less, use less heat on it, etc. For hair growth you can apply castor oil to your scalp. It's very thick so try mixing it with another oil like sunflower oil or almond oil. Castor oil promotes hair growth.

For your skin you can use apple cider vinegar to cleanse your face, it also helps brighten your skin and can help with breakouts. Lemon juice helps as well, you can use sugar for an exfoliator, or use milk on your face. For a moisturizer and also for a cleanser you can use oil. Yes, oil does good for your skin. Castor oil has properties similar to an antibiotic cream and it's said to help problem skin. Olive oil is great for dryness, you can leave it on or wash it off. Tea tree oil is something else that works great for problem skin as well. It's strong but natural.

All of these things can be used in whatever combination works for you, it's kind of a trial and error thing to see what works for you since each person is different and their body's are different. I've found the natural stuff works better for me for both hair and skin then when I used store products. Look into vitamins that can help promote healthy hair growth as well as help your skin, so that way you are working on the problem to prevent it as well as deal with it on the outside. Goodluck! ჻ೋ჻

Do you have any natural suggestions for the scars that acne can create? I've used Accutane, which reduced the scars, and I'm currently using the Proactive three step solution, but that hasn't reduced the scarring. I would like to try a more natural approach to reduce the scars left from acne.

჻ೋ჻ I know castor oil also helps with scars, I don't know how but somehow it can tell the difference between scar tissue and regular skin and it helps fix the scar. It is a very slow process though, it's not an overnight thing at all, but it's said to work. Honey, vitamin e oil, and aloe vera applied to the scars are all supposed to help with them as well. You should exfoliate your skin too, but gently and don't over do it. Olive oil can work too, but it might not be good with oily skin. Lemon juice is said to help as well. It's kind of a trial and error thing to find what works and sticking with it, because natural methods do take a bit more time. My face looks better and I use a mix of apple cider vinegar, lemon juice (freshly juiced from lemons myself) and tea tree oil for cleanser and clarifier. I use olive oil and castor oil on my skin and occasionally honey, It has helped fade my scars some plus it makes my face look brighter. I hope that helps! ჻ೋ჻

Thanks for the advice. I'll do some research, as well.

Witch Hazel (the real stuff, not with lots of additives) works like a charm for me. I'll wash my face with a tea tree oil facial soap then do a blot down with witch hazel and I see results within two days.

I know your comment wasn't meant for me, so I hope I don't offend!

[Emily the StrangeStar|0 likes] [|reply]

Thank you for the advice. Does the witch hazel and tea tree oil help with the scarring associated with acne or does it only help with acne? I'm using Proactive, which is mostly affective with the acne, but it hasn't reduced the scarring, like Accutane.

[xo heatherStar|0 likes] [|reply]

I'm not sure, but with the scarring, you could use an over the counter topical cream. I know the regular creams for scar reduction should work for that.

If you want to improve your skin go to your doctor, there are medications, but there are gentler routes of skin treatments, such as prescribed cleansers and moisturisers. If you are a girl you could always try the combination pill if you are able to take and are comfortable with taking it.

Do you like how your hair looks after a hair cut? If so ask your hair dress what products she is using and how you can achieve the same look yourself.

If you have really bad acne I would suggest Accutane. Granted, it's like a last resort because it really dries out your skin, but it gets rid of the acne PERFECTLY... I have been on it for about 5 months now and the results have been amazing.

Also -- I think confidence it the secret to beauty. You don't have to be Jennifer Anniston. You just have to love who you are despite what you look like, and people will perceive you as the beautiful person you are. Granted, that's a lot harder to do than it sounds, but just remind yourself what an awesome person you are.

I took Accutane for six months three years ago. It worked for two years. I wanted to try another trial of Accutane but I was told that it was taken off of the market in the United States. I've been using Proactive. It helps but the Accutane was more effective.

[xo heatherStar|0 likes] [|reply]

I live in the US and it's not off the market, it's just a lot harder to get -- I have to get a new prescription every month, and I have to take pregnancy tests every month...
Proactive never worked for me, but it honestly depends on the kind of acne you have.
I would talk to a dermatologist and see what they say. They're usually good at telling what will work for individual people. In my case, everything that I tried (proactive, retina A cream, antibiotics, the Pill) didn't work. Accutane is the only thing that has given *me* results.

[Aubrey;Star|0 likes] [|reply]

It was as difficult to obtain three years ago, as well. I had to see my dermatologist once a month, fill a one month prescription each month, complete the pledge program, take a pregnancy test every month, and get blood tests on my liver either every month or bimonthly. I tried everything except Proactive before I completed a six month cycle of Accutane. It worked for two years, but then my acne returned. I would consider taking the product again, even though it's a difficult process, because no other product has completely cured my acne and the scarring.
I was under the impression that Accutane was removed from the market. I read an article stating that is was being removed from the market. That was in June 2009. I just assumed that it was removed from the market. http://www.newsinferno.com/pharmaceuticals/accutane-pulled-from-market-amid-lawsuits-increased-generic-competition/

It's a pain in the butt, but for someone like me, who had acne for nearly ten years -- and it was pretty much crippling because it made me VERY insecure about my looks, and I still don't feel comfortable with how I look -- it's the best option out there.
The reason they have to monitor you is because Accutane causes serious birth defects, and they need to make sure that you don't get pregnant while the medication is in your system.

[Aubrey;Star|0 likes] [|reply]

I know all of the reasonings and precautions. I went through the pledge program and talked to my dermatologist. It's basicaly impossible to not be educated about Accutane if you are taking the medication legally in the Unites States. I'm glad you're a success story, as welll.

[xo heatherStar|0 likes] [|reply]

I was just a little confused because it sounded like you were against the medicine/program? Sorry if I misunderstood what you were trying to say.

Sorry I dont know how to do links. But the maker Roche has discontinued making it... So if it's not completely off the market yet = it soon will be. Mind you its not recalled. They've just opted not to continue making it

[Meghans FollieStar|0 likes] [|reply]

I wonder if that includes generics? I'm technically on "Amnesteem", the generic version of Accutane.

[Aubrey;Star|0 likes] [|reply]

Okay - I just checked, but that was written in 2009, and it's currently 2011 and I'm still on the medication, so I don't think they followed through with discontinuing it? Everything I found when I googled "discontinued accutane" is from 2009.

[Aubrey;Star|0 likes] [|reply]

Accutane isn't off the market, but it is considerably harder to get. It is the only medication made to go through a program called iPledge because of the extreme birth defects it can cause to a fetus conceived while on this medication. It also has INTENSE side effects, which I had to watch first hand when my best friend was on Accutane . It did AMAZING things for her skin, but really messed with her on the side effects.

Three years ago, I took Accutane for six months. I had to see my dermatologist once a month, fill a one month prescription each month, complete the pledge program, take a pregnancy test every month, and get blood tests on my liver either every month or bimonthly. The side effects varying depending on the person. I had dry, sensitive skin, but no other complications. There are more serious side effects, especially if you become pregnant or if the medication affects your liver. Liver function is monitored and pregnancy is essentially prohibited while the medication is taken.

[xo heatherStar|0 likes] [|reply]

Is it an internal medication, or a cream? Because if a cream causes extreme birth defects, that's so scary!

[Emily the StrangeStar|0 likes] [|reply]

Accutane is an oral medication taken by mouth as a pill.

[xo heatherStar|0 likes] [|reply]

I thought accutane was pulled from the market in 09?

[Meghans FollieStar|0 likes] [|reply]

If it was, it's definitely back on. I'mm currently on it right now.

"July 8, 2009 -- Accutane won't be sold any more, drug giant Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. has announced.

Generic versions of the acne drug, called isotretinoin, are still available from several manufacturers. But Roche, which has sold the drug to 13 million patients since 1982, will not be one of them.

The decision was made for "business reasons," Roche announced in a news release. Those reasons include declining sales: Accutane sales now make up less than 5% of the isotretinoin market.
"

"Roche said Accutane will be pulled in the U.S. and 11 other countries. The last date for distribution in the United States was June 25. According to Reuters, Accutane is now no longer available from Roche directly but patients may still be able to get it from pharmacies."

Both quotes were taken from links on Roche's website

The BRAND Accutane was pulled, but the medication itself is still distributed under different brand names.

I think you probably should have clarified, because it definitely sounded like "accutane isn't available anymore" and it was confusing.

[Aubrey;Star|0 likes] [|reply]

Accutane is the brand name for the medication that Roche pulled off the market. Accutane is no longer sold. So it is not available anymore. However the generic form is.. Sorry guess I dont see the confuusion in that

[Meghans FollieStar|0 likes] [|reply]

Like the other person mentioned, Accutane is one of the most effective drugs. I used it in 2001, and it helped drastically. Do some research on the side effects first because there are a lot. If you're looking for OTC options, Oxy Balance 10 is the soap that worked well for me.

I had my hair falling out at one point and took this vitamin called biotin forte. It made my hair grow fast+made it really shiny. Also it's good for your nails too strengthens them and what not. It's only like $10 or possibly even less at the drug store. :]

[Je me souviens|0 likes] [|reply]

Don't bother asking, it comes naturally for some people. But your diet can effect your skin, so try changing that around and see what happens.

I'm 95% sure I know who posted this and woman you are GORGEOUS! I feel the same way, though. My face has always been not so great & with the birth of my son it's just gotten worse. And WHO has time to do their hair these days with kids around?! I am trying a new skin care routine: remove make up, wash with Cetaphil cleanser, and then blot with witch hazel (someone else mentioned this... YES!). It's only been a day but my face actually isn't as oily/red as it usually is.
