Language Skills

This is going to sound really racist, because it's coming from a white girl, but I've got to say this: I really hate the way black people mangle the English language. I swear, it's like they take huge pride in saying things wrong ON PURPOSE. For example, I work in a building located on "Consulate Drive." ALL the black people I talk to throughout the day say "Consolidated Drive." FFS, they are DIFFERENT WORDS! I also remember working for a group of resorts that offered different types of breakfasts; some were buffet-style and some were full service, and some were continental. The black people insisted on saying "breakfasses" instead of "breakfasts" when attempting to speak the plural form of the word "breakfast." COME ON PEOPLE! Where did this pride in being a mush-mouth come from??!! It's nothing to be proud of! You sound like ignorant trash!

You sound like ignorant trash as well, sadly I know who this is and will not be reading you anymore.

I'm pretty sure that speaking that way not a race thing. I say "breakfasses" when I talk fast, and I'm white.

Your secret doesn't sound racist. It is racist.

Cultural differences, my friend. You say tomato, I say tomato. And white people mess with the English language just as much as any other race of people. Take txt speech for example.
Yeah. This does sound racist and ignorant.

Oh shit, you guys, we got Noam Chomsky up in this entry.

Shut up, you probably mangle it worse without even knowing it.

I don't think that's a 'black' thing--I think it's an annoying habit that a lot of people have. That and saying "aks" instead of "ask".

I don't think you're particularly racist. Not as much as I think some of your commenters may be overreacting, anyway. When I (a white girl as well) am at work, my crew and I get so bored that we talk like total idiots, jumble the English language on purpose, and make ridiculous noises just to make each other laugh and pass the time more quickly. Believe it or not, it works. BUT, the people that do annoy me are more often the white people that try to sound black by butchering the language. Especially online, where they go out of their way to try to type out the 'accent' or whatever you'd call it. Like saying 'da' instead of 'the', or adding 'z's where 's's once were. Yeah, that irritates the holy hell out of me. So I can sympathize.

I don't think you're racist and I get where you are coming from. (People are so quick to throw the "racist card" around without actually knowing what it means) My husband is black and while he speaks correctly sometimes his family doesn't. Like when they say LibAry instead of LibRary. It is a small pet peeve of mine but I don't think anyone should judge you for feeling this way...

....not ALL black people talk this way, for one. & for two, WHITE people talk this way, too.

Well if you really want to be technical about it, I am sure that the English just cannot stand how we Yanks mangle the English language what with all the removing of u's in words such as color and favorite...Really though, I think its just regional stuff, if you go to other places in the country people will sound different.

i agree with you. however, i also know its not just black people. its just fucking americans. not ALL americans but a good portion. and most of the people who say aks instead of asks or esparation instead experation, well THEY ARE IGNORANT and they will most likely be that way forever. just feel better about yourself for speaking american properly and having an education. have a little patience my friend.

I agree with you.. But I also agree it's not ALL black people.
