I want to leave my boyfriend, but I can't bear the thought of him being alone. I don't know if I "love" him but he's a reasonably good man who deserves to be happy - and he says I make him happier more than anyone ever has in his life. He even wants to marry me but I said no.
your boyfriend will find someone else one day. if you think he's a good man who deserves to be happy, he also deserves to have a relationship with someone who WANTS to be with him.
don't stay in an unwanted situation just to spare his feelings.

unfortunately, i understand your dilemma. the best advice i got is this: you need to live for you and do what is going to make YOU happy. and its hard when that hurts other people.. but in a sense you might be hurting him more by staying with him. maybe you need to care about him enough to let him go?
