Tales of a Harried Housewife

Nearly 4:00am and the house is so quiet, if we had mice I'm sure I could hear them scurrying about. Thank heavens we do not have mice. That would just freak me out.

I thought yesterday would be a drama-free day, but no such luck. My cousin Jan, bless her heart, was on the phone with her prom date, who became a lawyer. He doesn't practice the kind of law Corri needs, but he did have a friend who he referred Jan to in order to help Corri out. Jan spent all afternoon on the phone interviewing this lawyer and telling him about Corri's case. The short version is that Jan retained his services, at her expense, to go to court for Corri so she didn't have to appear this morning. He's going to go in and tell them she's voluntarily checked into a rehab facility and get the case continued. If Corri and Jan decide after this to not retain his services any further, then she's only out the retainer and the contract allows her to break with him. The retainer will carry her all the way to trial. If at that point she needs the lawyer, the cost is $6,000, which Jan and her husband will pay, and work out an agreement with Corri to get that money back. I have a feeling that Corri will be living with us for a long time to come if she's got to pay that much money back. Jan and her husband Tom will be visiting Corri in rehab so they can have a face-to-face with her, once she's able to have visitors. I was just temporarily speaking on Corri's behalf until Jan can speak with her herself, but I gave the go ahead to put the lawyer on retainer so Corri can focus on rehab without having to leave and worry about court.

I called WRS and left a message for Corri that she didn't have to go to court, and I also called Mom so she could pass that information along to Dad so he'd know he didn't have to pick Corri up at 7:00am. Corri was able to call me for five minutes and get the run down. It was good to hear her voice and she sounds good. She told me they went to Serenity House for AA meetings twice yesterday.

Dad, however, did not take the news well. In fact, he went off on Mom, yelling and screaming like a lunatic about how nobody calls him directly, all because I called Mom to pass on the information. There's a reason I don't call Dad for things like this. One, he asks too many questions about things he doesn't need to know because the legal agreement is between Jan and Corri and not his business. Two, he flies off the handle at the drop of a hat and I don't need that kind of crap in my life. I can take Dad in very small doses. I just feel bad for Mom who had to leave the house last night, just to get some relief from his screaming. At least this time, Mom didn't take it out on me.

My family, I swear to Pete, puts the "fun" in "dysfunctional."

Mom and I text messaged after she got home last night, and mercifully, Dad was in bed sleeping when she arrived. She knows what the agreement will be between Jan and Corri, but she's going to keep her mouth shut about it and play stupid. It's no one's busines but Corri and Jan what they agree to, and I'm only in the loop because I'm speaking on Corri's behalf while she's incommunicado. But Mom and I agreed, it's nice to know that Jan loves Corri enough to help her out, and right now she's the only one of the cousins who has bothered to care or stay in contact with me about Corri. The rest of them don't say a word in response to my updates. It's nice to know not ALL of our family are shitheads.

Al has to make a stop at WRS today on his way into work to drop off a box of things Corri asked for... some clothes and hangers and things. I had to find her some highlighters to use, too. Fortunately, I had some spares.

As for me, I spent the day watching stuff on the DVR to get caught up on The View and my soaps. Today I will catch up on other programs I've wanted to watch but haven't been able to see. I was pretty bored, however, because I never watch that much television in a day. My concentration span is waning right now, and I'm more than 3/4 done with my latest Shopaholic book, but I just can't pay attention long enough to finish reading it. The next one in the series is an overdue book, too, but I'm not taking it back to the library until I can finish it. I'll pay their stupid fine.

Speaking of paying things, my social security check wasn't deposited into my account yesterday, nor did I receive it in the mail a day early like I usually do. Thankfully, the check came in yesterday's mail, so it will get deposited today and I can finally sit down and pay my bills. I hate it when I get behind because of the mail.

I guess I will get an early shower today and head out to deposit my check and do some other errands while I'm out. I just have to be back here in time for A to leave for work.

That's what's going on for now in my life. I think that's enough, don't you?

Yes, that's quite enough going on for you. Glad the lawyer situation is under control. Yay for Jan. Your Dad sounds like a handful.

I was thinking that your Dad sounds like mine when he wasn't informed, like he thought he should be.
Glad to see someone else is there to help you out a bit too.

Ryc: Yes! Very much so. Though I was off by 2 (she's actually 38), she reminds me of a 16 y/o in her thought process. It irks me.
