Dear Diary
Too many human beings are selfish in their ways- how many people walk by the bell ringers during the holiday season? Ignore the man asking for change on the corner? The person who is broken down on the side of the road? The injured animal limping down the road?
So many of us walk by without giving these people or animals a second thought. My father has always taught me, help those in need, give what you can-help those who can not help themselvs..
Once when I was 17, my dad and I were driving down one of the busiest streets in our city, middle of winter, freezing cold, threatening snow, and saw these two boys pushing their car down the middle of the street, I said "Aw Dad, its cold we have to help them!" My Dad, the man that he is, did not even hesitate. He pulled in the nearest drive way, hopped out of the car and ran across the street to help them push it into an empty Dr.'s office lot. They had run out of gas. Silly boys. My Dad had them hop in the cab of the truck and drive them to the nearest gas station where he waited to give them a ride back to their car. Well, you would figure a gas station would have gas cans, WRONG, no gas cans, so then we drove across the street to the pharmacy where my mom worked, to buy a gas can(yes a pharmacy has gas cans, yet a GAS station does not, go figure!). So the boys have 20$, and the gas can was gonna cost them all their money, plus some. So here comes my Daddio to the rescue. He gives the boys another 20$, drives them back to the gas station, and then back to the car, where they were able to fill up and get on the rode. The boys were so grateful-I think about them sometimes, wonder if they ever think about my Dad and do something good for someone else. Dad always says" if a person needs money, asks for money, don't just turn away, if you can spare something do, you don't know their story, if they use it for beer, or ciggerettes, or something other then what they said they needed it for, that is between them and their God" Now i'm not 100% on the whole God thing, but thats for another day, I do believe in Karma.
Whenever the holiday season is upon us, I constantly carry change and dollar bills with me, whenever I pass a bell ringer i put something in the kettle. When I go shopping and the store clerk asks me if I want to round up my total and donate it to whatever charity I say yes, donate 1$-of coarse!
My fiance and I were at a gas station not too long ago and a woman said she needed money for gas, and actually had to be pushed to the gas station. My fiance was skeptical(it wasn't on the best side of town) But I dug through my whole car, and managed to find a few dollars in change, and hey if that money didnt go to gas, well I still did what I hoped someone would do for me.
Doing good things makes me feel like a better person. If I can help, in even just a small way, and make someone else realize there are good people in the world, and then that person does something for someone else, then the world is just a little bit better.
Good deeds, and acts of selflessness are necessary. The media shows us on a regular basis the harshness of the reality around us. The murderers, the rapists, the theives, the violence all around us. They much rather show bad news, then good news, bad news sells, well thats a shame.
There are good people left in this world, are you one of them?
