Chapter 6:

We wound our way through the massive crowd, avoiding getting close to Anna at all costs. I hid behind quite a few people that were easily twice my height. I watched as the lead singer of Vial put his hand on her hip and pulled her into him like they might break down and have sex right there on stage. I couldn’t believe our little stuck-up Anna was doing this. I couldn’t recall her even kissing Joel, let alone them sleeping together.

When I finally found my way to some steps that led up to a higher floor, I ran up as quickly as I could. I had lost Cheyenne in the crowd somewhere and that was the only way I was going to find her. As I reached the top step, I looked around to find naked women everywhere. They were either in cages or sitting on the fellow club-hoppers’ laps. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I knew I was coming to a club but this was definitely not what I was expecting. As I looked out the bay window that opened up to the crowd, I realized that the exotic cages were hung up in regular intervals across the club’s ceiling.

As I watched, a beautiful blonde woman, completely naked, walked up onto the stage and grabbed the lead singer from the side that Anna wasn’t glued to. I was surprised Anna didn’t smack the other woman, but then again, why would she? She had Joel. Right? I tore my eyes away from the threesome on stage to continue looking for Joel. My eyes scurried across the faces of drug-induced young adults until they came across Joel. He was standing in the back corner, tears flowing from his eyes. I bounced down to the dance floor from the large window and ran to him as quickly as I could.

“Joel! Are you okay? What’s going on?” He just stared at me. He looked a mess and I could swear he was shaking.

“I did something bad, Amelia. You have to go. Get away. RUN!” He yelled in my face. Something was going on here that made him lose it, apparently.

“No. What happened? Tell me. Do you want to go outside and talk?”

“No! I don’t want to talk to anyone. This is wrong. It’s all wrong. But it feels so right! I’ve been missing so much.” He broke down into tears yet again.

Cheyenne! I need you! I found Joel and something is seriously wrong with him! I thought. I needed her because I had absolutely no idea how to get out of him whatever it was he was talking about.

Moments later, Cheyenne shot up to my side, reaching to hold Joel’s cheek. “What’s going on, Joel? You have got to tell us. It’s the only way we can help you.”

“I don’t need any help and nothing is wrong with me! Mind your own goddamn business, Chey! I’m the happiest vampire on this whole fucking planet right now and you want to take that from me!”

I instinctively turned around to see who might have heard him. No one seemed to have noticed, or they just didn’t care. Either way, I turned back to Joel. “What have you done?”

“Nothing of your concern Amelia. Now, both of you need to get out of my face. I’m missing the show!”

I turned around to see Anna making out with the aforementioned band leader. He was a very tall, muscular man. He had dreads hanging well past his shoulders and he was absolutely gorgeous. No matter how good he looked, I couldn’t figure out why Anna would do that to Joel right in front of him.

“Whatever, Joel. If you decide you need help, you know where to find us.” I stalked off, so angry I could barely breathe.

I felt Cheyenne tugging at my thoughts, but I couldn’t turn around. I was too angry to be in a room full of humans. Anger tended to bring out the worst in me.

Not now, Chey. I need a minute! I snapped.

She didn’t seem to care if I needed a minute or not. She caught up with me and stopped me in my tracks. “Come here! What’s wrong? I know you’re worried about Joel, but we can’t freak out until we know what’s going on!”

“What has she done to him, Chey? He’s never spoken to me like that before!” My hands trembled and my voice broke.

As I was breaking down, I felt a small, cold hand close around my shoulder. “Since you decided to come here, you need to follow me.” I would know Anna’s prissy voice anywhere. She clenched down so that the bones in my shoulder felt like they might shatter. I was going to get her for this.
I let her lead me to an abandoned room in the very back of the club, she was pulling Cheyenne behind her. I wasn’t sure why she wanted to be here, but I didn’t really care at that moment. I was ready to rip every single limb from her body. She had tried to tear our family apart and I wasn’t about to just accept that and move on.

“Listen, you don’t know what you’re getting yourself into, Amelia. You wouldn’t understand. You’re going to take this all wrong and get us all into trouble. I like it here and I don’t want to leave.” She was actually pleading with me. What was going on?

“I don’t know what you’re up to, Anna, but we will find out and put a stop to it. I cannot believe you made Joel fast. What kind of shit is that? You know how weak we get!” Cheyenne yelled, not caring who heard her.

“Yes, I do know. But I was showing him another way of life. He would never have tried it if he was full.”

“So, you took him against his will, made him fast, and forced him to feed from a human? That’s it? I can’t fucking believe you. This is ridiculous. You know better. You were taught better, Anna.” I replied.

“I didn’t force him to do anything! I talked to him about it before we came here and he said he wanted to try. He just didn’t think he could do it unless he was really hungry. It’s not like I starved him for days and made him come here. It was what he wanted.”

“Right.” Cheyenne laughed sarcastically.

I zipped up to Anna and pinned her wrists to the wall. When I was only an inch from her face, I told her, “If anything happens to him, or anyone else for that matter, tonight, I will have your head on a fucking stick. Do you understand me?”

She trembled as she flashed her fangs at me. Just then, the door busted open to reveal Joel, looking amazingly high. “What’s going on in here? Amelia! Get your hands off of her!”

“I was just leaving.” I pushed past him and ran to the middle of the club. I took a drink from one of the cute waitresses that walk around with shots, and started dancing. I jumped around, threw my hair back and forth, and conveyed the anger out of my body. Soon enough, Cheyenne found me and dragged me to a more quiet side of the bar.

“I had a talk with Anna.” She said. She looked positively scared of me at that moment. It actually kind of made me feel bad for making her feel that way. She had never seen me really angry before.

“…And?” I replied. I was not in the mood for games.

“I know it sounds crazy, but you have got to listen to what she has to say. I may still be skeptical, but if what she says is true, we don’t have to worry about anything anymore. Please, give her a chance.”

That girl had lost her mind, in my opinion, but I decided to follow her back inside after a long debate on the subject.

Cheyenne led me to a different room; one filled with chairs and a large, rounded table. What kind of club was this? I always imagined clubs being run down and grungy but this place had some nice touches on it.

Anna was sitting at one end of the table, Joel at her side. Cheyenne pulled me to the other end were we took a seat together and waited for whatever was supposed to be happening. I wasn’t sure what was about to happen, but I wanted it to be over with as soon as possible.

“Amelia, before I begin, I really need to ask you not to interrupt. The things I’m about to tell you are very important.” She nodded to Cheyenne and I.

“I’ll do what I can.” I snapped at her.

“You have our attention, Anna.” Cheyenne covered my irritation.

“I know we have all been taught that feeding from humans is wrong. It is looked down upon because of the fact that it is possible to kill the human. As we all know, it is possible, but not necessary. I need you to bear with me for minute. Please don’t say anything until I have finished.” She looked between the both of us. I was already nervous from what she had already said, so I wasn’t quite ready for what she laid on us next. “We can drink human blood. Its ea—“

“What the f----“I interjected.

“Amelia! Hold on! Patience is a virtue, Jesus Christ.” Cheyenne said, irritated at me.

“I can’t believe I’m even hearing this bullshit. Continue.” I was so unbelievably pissed at even the
mention of what Anna was saying.

“Listen to me. I was out feeding the other night when we first got here and I came across Draidan, the lead singer of Vial. When he told me who he was, I recognized the band immediately. I reacted the exact same way you did, Amelia. I swear I did. But he explained another way to me and it made perfect sense. He gave me a capped bottle that was filled to the top with blood. I assumed it was DD, but when I tasted it, it was unlike anything I have ever tasted. I swear it was. I was so scared. I thought I had just went against everything I had ever been taught, that was, until Draidan told me that it was blood given willingly by humans.” It was official. She had gone completely insane.

“So, what you’re trying to tell me is that you can just go ask any random human to let you cut them so that you can fill up a bottle of blood and they’ll do it? Right.” I said. It got more and more ridiculous with every word she spoke. I was too young to have to deal with this stuff. “I think it’s funny how I’ve had four shots, and you still aren’t making any sense.”

“Amelia, just listen to me. I’m serious. The rumor had started about Vial because some human girl slept with Draidan and willingly gave him her blood. She had to go to the hospital the next day because she had passed out. She started the rumor about Vial because of a misunderstanding. They don’t kill anyone. They slowly tell people what they really are and if the humans accept, they feed. No one has to die, Amelia! It’s amazing. We might be able to finally get some harmony out of all this confusion!”

With that, I had to think a little bit. What she was saying sounded amazing, but I still couldn’t convince myself one hundred percent. I needed more proof and needed to know that no innocent people were getting hurt from it. It was an exciting thought, though. We could have human blood without being completely monsters. It would be a really nice change; that was for sure.
Without saying another word, Anna slid an open glass bottle to me. She slid another one to Cheyenne and we both looked at each other, wondering whether we should do as she says.

“Are you sure no human was killed to get this?” I asked.

“Positive. Janelle!” Anna yelled to someone that was waiting outside. She flew in and stepped up to Anna’s side. “Amelia, Cheyenne, this is Janelle. She is complete human and donated her blood for our new cause. We are hoping to get it openly approved by vampires and humans alike.”

“Oh, shit. This isn’t happening.” I heard Cheyenne mumbling to herself. “Maybe this was a bad idea. We can’t out ourselves to the world. Not yet. They are not ready for something like this, Anna.”

“Taste it, and then try to say the same sentence to me again.” She mused.

Cheyenne looked at me and I returned her gaze. At the same time, we reached down and grabbed the bottles. “This really is yours, right?” I asked Janelle.

“Yes, ma’am. Here, you can see the mark from the needle used to extract it.” She held out her arm and showed me a miniscule red mark on her pale skin.

“How do you feel? Are you sick or anything? That’s a lot of blood to lose at one time.” Cheyenne prodded.

“Really, I’m fine! I am behind you guys one hundred percent, and I would tell you if I was having any adverse reactions. Just try it!” She gave me a wide smile.

“Okay, here goes nothing.” Cheyenne and I turned up our blood-filled bottles.
