Roxy is about 15 months old so I assume this is her first heat ( we adopted her a couple of weeks ago)
She was swollen when we got her - So I figured she was in heat - Friday she started her "period" - how long will this last? We want her to be an inside dog, but I dont want dog blood all over the house - any ideas? Do they make doggie pads? please dont turn this into a thread about the dangers of pittbulls either.. please |

I'm sorry my pitt was a boy, so I don't know. I would think she would tear anything you put on her rear end up into shreds. Most pits do not like anything on them. Mine even hated his collar.

After her 2nd heat we will. Our neighbor has a blue nose APBT that we want to use as a Stud. A lot of our neighbors after seeing Roxy and the neighbors APBT - want one of their own. As long as she has a liter under 7 - we already have homes for them.. And if she has more then 7 - we'll give them up to people who have an excellent rep with dogs and won't train them to be mean

How did I just KNOW this was going to be here? Awesome. Because there aren't enough pitbulls on petfinder. Hell, that's ALL that is on petfinder in my area. Sorry, I don't believe in animal breeding. I won't push my beliefs on you but I would suggest giving petfinder and petharbor a look and if someone wants a pitbull puppy, they can adopt one. There are plenty of options.

While I appreciate your point of view - really I do - I don't share it.
Roxy was a rescue dog that we were only supposed to foster but ended up falling in love with. When you want a pittbull its best if you have been around both parents because some of the temperament is genetic. When rescuing a pittbull there is no way of knowing what the parents were like, if there are any genetic medical issues etc. There is also a big difference between allowing for one liter and breeding your dog to be a puppy mill. Its also known that if you allow a female pit to have a liter it will help to calm her down even more. |

I'm assuming you didn't actually go through a rescue to get this dog. Please just understand that I have strong views of breeding because of how many dogs I've seen be put to sleep in the shelter. Volunteering there was a wakeup call. You also said that you rescued this dog and that their temperament is genetic. Well, do you REALLY know what the parents are like? People lie to get animals out of their house. Believe me, I adopted my rat/jack russell terrier only to find out a few months later he had a disease that nearly killed him because the previous owners lied. You say you have families for only up to 7 puppies, but what about the rest? Are you going to spay and neuter each puppy before adopting them out? Are you going to be responsible if they want to give you the puppy back? What if one of those pups nip a child in the home and the parents decide that the dog is violent? With the way the economy is going, what if one of those families need to move into an apartment and the complex has breed restrictions? Are you going to take those dogs back? Also, what if there are complications and your dog needs a c-section? Are you going to pay for that? I just want you to know, it's not like there aren't pitbull puppies available through adoption along with a ton of other dogs. If people REALLY wanted one, they could find one. And, no offense to you, but I'd MUCH rather get a pitbull from a rescue that will do a ton more temperament testing than a regular person would, plus they would have a guarantee contract that would give me more reassurance that they would assist if the dog does have issues.I know you'll do whatever you want, but seriously think about it. Dogs are overbred and there are thousands that get put to sleep every day. Is it really worth it?

What part of Roxy being a rescue dog wasnt clear? Yes she came from "second chance".

What isn't clear to me is that a rescue would allow any of their dogs to leave without being spayed or neutered. I've never heard of it. That's why I thought she was a private adoption.

All of the humane society's around here (Ontario, Canada) make it a condition to get your dog fixed. Before you can take the dog home you have to have proof that you've booked an appointment to have them fixed (appointment day/time, vet's office name and contact info) and they follow up with it to make sure.
I personally think it's an awesome thing. |

The second chance website says that all dogs are neutered before anyone is allowed to adopt them. They have a funky looking Pomeranian at the minute.

If you were looking at the Centex one you would of seen that they recently had a fire that destroyed their building and killed over 140 pets. They had to quickly find "foster homes" for the pets that they had promised to take in.
Roxy was one of those pets. It was never our original intention to keep her until we had her here for about a week. Trust me after the fire - whether or not a pet was fixed was not a top priority espec when the pets were being placed in fostering/temp homes. But again - thanks for your concern |

they do but your best bet is to just pay the $60 and get her spayed. "Higher hormone levels are associated with a higher risk of developing cancer and other diseases. Spaying or neutering a dog lowers hormone levels, thereby reducing the dog's health risks."

I'm really sad to see that someone ripped you a new one about wanting to breed your dog. I understand how many animals don't have homes - but I personally wanted to breed my dog, also - I wanted to watch puppies being born, and watch them grow up, etc - one time. I chose to neuter him, because I didn't want to deal with the COST involved and also due to the fact that he was getting aggressive.. but as with anything, I believe that should be your choice. :[
They make puppy/dog diapers and pads. It usually lasts about 7 days? |

I really don't think it's "ripping a new one" when we really didn't argue or get dramatic about it. I based my opinions on the fact that I've volunteered in kill shelters and seen perfectly good animals get put to sleep, especially "breed restricted" animals. Most puppies are dropped off at the shelter due to the owners not being able to find homes or the homes fall through. My local petfinder and petharbor are filled with pitbull puppies, all very adorable, all ready spayed/neutered and utd on their shots. Pretty good deal if you ask me. The fact is, you will do whatever you want, but in my head, I see it as pimping out your child. That's how I see my pets, as my child, and I don't think I could do that to my child just for my own personal pleasure. It's not like I never thought about breeding a pet. Then someone suggested I go to a shelter and really think about it. I realized that it was just not what I could do knowing there are thousands of pets out there needing homes. Like I said, it's MY personal opinion and I shared it in hopes that she would just listen, which she did, and she does not agree. That being said, I don't think she's an evil person, and I guess I kinda hoped that maybe she'd see it my way, but then again, that's what we all want sometimes, don't we? I will suggest, if you really want to see puppies born, maybe even get one of your own, you can contact any rescue and ask if they have any pregnant dogs needing a foster home. That's often a HUGE load of their shoulders as it takes a lot of time and effort to take care of a new mom and the pups. Personally, I suggest volunteering at a shelter and seeing why exactly I don't agree with breeding whether for your own personal litter or to sell. Also, if you find it absolutely impossible not to breed your dog, I suggest checking out the website, learntobreed.com and really see what you should go through to breed a litter.

I don't think you really took the time to read my reply.. "I chose to neuter him, because I didn't want to deal with the COST involved, and also due to the fact that he was getting aggressive." - So I don't need to learn to breed my dog, as I already believe it is impossible as he's got no baby makin' parts ;)

My mother in law made doggy underwear by cutting out a hole for the tail then she just put a regular pad in it.

She made doggy underwear by cutting out a hole? Out of what, yo? Like, did she use ordinary knickers for humans and put a hole in? I have never heard of doggies wearing underwear, let alone pads!

Lol yeah she used child underwear and cut out a hole for the tail, and then put a pad in, it was very creative haha.
