So I got some Emerald Deluxe Mixed nuts, and there is this mystery nut in the package. The ingredients list these nuts so far: cashews, almonds, walnuts, pecans and brazil nuts. I know it's not any of these nuts, it looks like a small, fat almond that has been blanched. It doesn't taste like an almond either, it tastes very bland though doesn't really have a lot of flavor. I took some pictures for you guys. I have looked all over the internet for these nuts and I cannot tell what it is. At first I thought it was a lone nut in the can, but there are a lot of them! So here are the pictures I took:
I just find it odd that it isn't listed as an ingredient but it's in there! So if you know, please tell me what kind of nut it is! Thanks for your help! |

That's definitely a hazelnut without its shell.

It doesn't taste like a hazelnut and a hazelnut is more round while this is kind of flat like an almond.

could be a Brazil Nut.
Out of all the nuts in that mixed nut canister, that's the one that makes the most sense anyway. |

It's definitely not a Brazil Nut, a Brazil Nut is very large and dark brown.

actually, the dark brown part of a brazil nut is the skin, and it, like peanuts skin, comes off. And they are large. But they can get squished and misshapen. Which it looks like in this case.

Well there are brazil nuts in this can, and I do know what they look like and they don't look anything like these. I already found out what the nut is though, so it doesn't matter.

I have a couple of questions... Can you peel a thin layer off of it or is its surface just as hard as the rest of the nuts? and does it taste a little bit sweet?
|

No it tastes bland, and you can't peel anything off of it. It looks like it might have had a skin, that was taken off.

Then maybe it's blanched almond... There's no other option left! Blanched almonds do taste bland and look just like that.

Yeah I'm thinking that, but it tasted nothing like an almond. It's also weird that it tasted nothing like an almond.

It is a marcona almond, the link shows you a picture of some more.

That's why I asked if they tasted a little bit sweet. Marcona almonds taste a little sweet but she said they didn't taste sweet at all so I assumed that wasn't what they are =P

Looks to be a hazelnut...

No idea myself.... but it is kinda amusing to me that we just picked up a few scoops of mixed nuts at the grocery store not two hours ago. Must be that time of the year.

Looks like an almond to me, the second picture especially.

Yeah it looks like an almond, but doesn't taste like an almond. Almonds are also somewhat long and skinny, while this one is short and wide.

It's probably a deformed almond that didn't grow properly and thus didn't develop full flavour. It's not a hazelnut, unless American hazelnuts are vastly different from British ones. Hazelnuts are never flat like that, and they are grooved differently.

I googled a brazil nut and it looks extremely similar to that one you have there.
|
.xoxo Post Count: 263 |
That doesn't look similar to what is up there. I don't know what you were looking at. |
