I really answered from the desert island perspective, but as just a general suggestion, a couple to watch if you haven't are The Prestige and Memento.
I put them in the 'really odd but really good' category. :)

While not historically accurate (obviously), it makes for one hell of an epic tale. Well made; well acted.

The Fifth Element (1997)
It's a sci-fi orgasm. End of story.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
Really drawn out, but sooooo funny.

Leaves From Satan's Book (1919)
Exceptional silent film. One of the few silent films I'll watch (the others involve Charlie Chaplin!)

Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993)
Mel Brooks. Enough said. :P

Gosh, I did love 300!! It was like Gladiator (which I also love) but cooler, and involves less crying at the end!

This movie just never fails to tug at my emotional heartstrings and really helped me deal with some bad breakups

my obsession! a look philosophical book/movie. I have studied and have been obsessed with Alice in Wonderland for a very long time

A very sweet film, and i love being able to relate to the main character

Wall-E

Just a sweet, feel good animated movie that really makes you think about how you live your life

Ed-Wood

A great tribute to a maybe not so great director who touched all us Sci-Fi fans. Such a sweet, optimistic man to make a movie about! i loved every minute!

Gosh, my second Sci-fi related comment. Is it really that obvious that I love sci-fi?! I've never heard of Ed-Wood. I shall go google it!

I have a lot of favorite movies, but I think these are the top 5 that most people don't know that I would want them to watch. There are obvious good ones (well, obvious to me) like Superbad and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, but these movies people should just watch. Yep!
1. Bongwater (I think either you love it or you hate it. I love it with a passion!)
2. Yours, Mine and Ours (NOT the remake! Original with Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda. It's just a fun story)
3. Freaky Friday (once again, NOT THE REMAKE! The original with Jodie Foster. It's classic and I love it.)
4. Wristcutters: a Love Story (Netflix suggested this movie to me and I loved it. I want to buy it)
5. Me and You and Everyone We Know (love love LOVE Miranda July. I want to live in her head for like, two weeks, just to see how she processes everything in life)

Wristcutters is on my netflix list, but I think it's pretty far down the queue I'll have to up it!

this is a really tough question, because my favorites list is long. I love movies.
I would say
1) Moulin Rouge- it's my sentimental favorite for a few reasons.
2) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind- though the premise was a bit out there, it felt very realistic and I loved the acting
3) Slumdog Millionaire-the first movie in years to instantly jump into my top 5-absolutely loved it
4) The Incredibles- one of the smartest animated movies ever
5) Beauty and the Beast- my childhood favorite

Close honorable mentions go to Finding Neverland and Benny and Joon in there too. I do love Johnny.

OMG I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU ABOUT THE INCREDIBLES!!! I used to make my friends watch it every thursday night and they never got how amazing it is!!!

lol. The music in that movie is so good, and I love all the James Bond esque things they do. I made my dad watch it because he always liked James Bond and he got it. I think it's one of those things where you have to know what they are making a homage to in terms of the style, in order to get how smart it is.
I just felt like so many touches were in there for adults, and not in a crass way, just in a smart way.
Also, random fact, but the voice of Violet is Sarah Vowell, a really cool author who writes really funny nonfiction about American history. I am in the middle of reading a book of hers called Assassination Vacation ;-D

3. White Oleander (not nearly as good as the book, but I love the evolution of the protagonist)

I could not stop watching this movie when it came out.
