I've been thinking about this a lot lately, how certain styles of slang and such can change the idiolect in my head. One of the most obvious examples is the 'yo' that bounces around this site. I like yo. There's something about it stuck on the end of a sentence that makes everything seem much more uplifting.
Now, I'm not a linguist, so I don't really know why, but it seems to make sentences bouncier. Even though I don't always write 'yo' when I'm on Bloop, I find myself always thinking it, (yo). It creates an informality and a familiarity that adds to Bloop's overall unique idiolect. It seems almost to invite the person to reply, to be drawn in, to get involved. I think there's a reason it's become so popular. What words or phrases do this for you? Do you think in 'yo's? Do you say them aloud ever? |

Things I say aloud in my 'real life' all the time: gosh, yo, dude, innit, man, badass... gosh, yo, i just love my slang, innit, yo!

I have had to stop myself from using it in real life conversation! Hahaha. I don't use it much online but I do find myself mentally adding it on the end of my sentences.
I agree that it makes everything seem 'bouncier' - good choice of word! |

people who start every sentence with "dude." like, saying that never really directs exactly who you are talking to...

YES, YO! YO IS MY BLOOP IDIOLECT! IT PUNCTUATES MY SENTENCES, EMPHASISES MY POINTS AND MAKES ME BOUNCE! THE MORE I'M EMPHASISING A POINT, THE MORE YO'S ERUPT FROM ME! THE GOSH IS ALSO PART OF MY IDIOLECT, YO. ONE CAN'T HAVE A YO WITHOUT A GOSH. THE GOSH, BEING ENGLISH AND OLD-FASHIONED, RESPECTABLE SPINSTER TYPE LANGUAGE, TAMES THE NAUGHTY YO, AND STOPS HIM RUNNING TOTALLY WILD. THEY ARE LIKE A YIN AND A YANG, YO!
THE YO ACTUALLY PERFORMS THE ROLE OF AN 'INNIT' OR A 'N'EST PAS' OR A 'YOU SEE', DON'T YOU THINK, YO? |

Yes, it does, though I can't remember the term for that! I know 'you see' is a tag question... I think? Bah, my knowledge of linguistics fails.
The other idiolect I find very addictive is the lolcat one. Most of my friends will greet each other with 'how is you be?' and 'I is be kay' and all that. I think the silliness adds to the fondness. Or to the fonds as I originally wrote! |

I TIHNK 'INNIT' AND 'N'EST PAS' WOULD COUNT AS TAG QUESTIONS TOO, YO.
GOSH, YO, I DON'T THINK ANY OF MY REAL LIFE FRIENDS KNOW LOLCAT SPEAK. |

I think if anyone in my real life spoke "LOLcat speak", my eyes and ears would bleed, and my brain would melt right out of my head.

I like YO! It's fun. When I'm writing, I think of the yo's. lol But I never say them outloud or type them. I'm always afraid people here will just think I'm copying or something. lol :]
