Ryan's RC entry got me thinking... I'm increasingly start to think that the American education system is extremely poor when it comes to learning about countries and cultures outside of America. SO, prove me wrong... ;) Below is a list of countries. I want to know who knows what language they speak in each country. Please don't cheat. Tell me what you HONESTLY believe to be the first language of each country. Just for fun of course.
1. Portugal 2. Austria 3. Belgium 4. New Zealand 5. Luxembourg 6. The Netherlands 7. Scotland 8. Wales 9. Ireland 10. Canada 11. Brazil 12. Mexico 13. South Africa |

'Don't know' is also an acceptable answer in this quiz. :)

No one needs to prove you wrong because the entire world knows the truth. It's been proven that the American educational system SUCKS. We've got high school GRADUATES that can't even tell you where their own state is on the U.S. atlas. Not as many high school students know the answers to things such as what you've requested above as we would like to think. And it's just getting worse.
But by "first language" do you mean the original language spoken in that country, or the language that is now primarily USED in that country? Because for some of those on your list, they are completely different. |

I mean language primarily used now (NOT the original language, which would be harder!).

Well, it's kinda pointless to answer now that Puck and Transit have answered, because then I'd be accused of cheating.

Well, except Puck's. lol Cheat off her and you fail class.

GOSH, YO - NAUGHTY TRANSIT HASN'T GOT THEM ALL RIGHT, YO! JUST BECAUSE SHE KNOWS HOW TO SAY WELSH IN WELSH, YO, DOESN'T MEAN SHE KNOWS ALL THE COUNTRIES' LANGUAGES! HAVE A GO! JUST HIDE MY ANSWERS WITH YOUR HAND AND ALL, BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY MINE ARE THE ULTIMATE DEFINITIVE ANSWERS! ;D

Oh, and btw, I am American and I know the answers to all of those. BOTH of the answers to all of those, original language and language primarily used NOW.

That's because you're smart enough and motivated to learn this stuff outwith your high school education. And I knew YOU'D know the answers. ;)

Also, South African can actually be a trick question. First, there are more than one official language of South Africa. And depending on whom you ask, some will say English and some will say Afrikaans (sp?).
Ok, because I don't agree with Transit either, I'm going to post my answers. 1. Portugal = Portugeuse 2. Austria = a dialect of German 3. Belgium = Dutch 4. New Zealand = English 5. Luxembourg = Toss up between German dialect and French. 6. The Netherlands = Dutch 7. Scotland = Apparently English, lol, but before reading what Red Frag has to say, I would have said some form of Gaelic. 8. Wales = Welsh or English, not sure which is primary. 9. Ireland = English, like Scotland. But also Irish. 10. Canada = Depends on which part. Mostly English, though. 11. Brazil = Portuguese 12. Mexico = Spanish 13. South Africa = Depends on whom you ask. Could be English, could be Afrikaans. |

You're not as correct as you think. And you're right 13 is sort of a trick question (my answer would have been same as yours, but it's wrong). Please don't look up and post the correct answer here. I'll post them later.
One of your answers is incorrect. And two of your answers are incomplete (but not incorrect). And no.7. I'm sooooo disappointed. But thank you for your honesty. |

But like I said, 13 also depends on where you get your information. Not every resource agrees. And you've got some that say English, and some that say Afrikaans, and yet others that have a multitude of other languages. My best friend's family is from South Africa, and even they say it's Afrikaans.
Post the correct answers in my comments (they're all private). I'm curious. |

I may not have been as correct as I thought I was, but I was the most correct out of everyone who's actually taken this quiz so far (although not entirely sure I should count Estella's attempt, lol). AND I'm the only American. That's GOT to count for something! lol

I should say, I got the least FLAT OUT wrong. lol
|
~RedFraggle~ Post Count: 2651 |
Lol. True, but only two people have answered.
|
~*Shannon*~ Post Count: 462 |
LOL! I know. But still, I know more than you expected an American to know, right? lol So that STILL counts for something.

Belgium would be flemish, wouldn't it? Although in most parts you can get by with German or French.

Add french to Belgium!

My husband once had a Belgian roommate in college, so I knew they speak French! ;-D

I actually find it weird that most people seem to know that they speak dutch more than french... to me it's so much more normal to know the french part than the dutch one! And then again... I am calling it dutch, but they actually call it flemish.
|
~RedFraggle~ Post Count: 2651 |
I've always thought more about the French part, but that's mostly because I have a great aunt and uncle who lived in Belgium in a long time, and they used to always send us cards in French!

Hmm... yeah, I don't know why the french part is more "obvious" to me... I'd say it's because I lived in France for 5 years... but.... for 4 of those years I had a flemish Belgian friend... lol

It's been so long since I was in high school, though. I've had to brush up on so much stuff just so I can home educate my children. lol If you'd have asked me to answer these six months ago, I'd probably only have gotten a few right (though I'm not actually positive I got a lot of them right anyway...I'm still brushing up lol).
