Anyways I am going to New York and really scared to check my bag for some reason, so I was wondering how many people have had their bags lost by the airport? Or how many hasn't? I just don't want to lose my stuff, or have to be without clothes for a couple days while I am there.

I had my clothes lost ONCE and that was after a few years of flying. BUT they returned my stuff to the place where I was staying after a few days so it wasn't too bad. My mom always says that just in case that happens bring your toothbrush and toothpaste with you hahaha.

I've flown at least 100 times, all over the world. I've flown from the UK to Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, various places in Europe. And still my bag has only missed the plane twice... the first time on a flight between Edinburgh in Scotland and Bristol in England! And the second time on a Canadian flight between Toronto (where I had to get a connecting flight from the UK) and St Johns. Even then, on both those occassions it wasn't lost... they just accidently left it behind! And in both occassions it was put on the next plane and delivered to me where I was staying the next day.

If you're really worried, just put one outfit in your hand luggage just in case, and check the rest in.

I've flown 4 times, and have never lost my bags.

My husband had his lost and we have only flew a handful of times. They got it back to him in about 3 days. It sucked bc we were having to go re-buy stuff, but the airline reimbursed us for all the money we were out, which was awesome bc it was just like getting new stuff for free.lol

Im always scared about that too.
I pack a carry on with things that I wouldnt be able to do without, such as my makeup in a zip loc bag, hair straightner, a change of clothes and undies and shampoo and conditioner and body wash.
That way, if my bag doesnt make it, I have the essentials for a night or two.
Also, put a tag on your bag for your address back home.
That way, even though it isnt with you, you'll have your suitcase and its things at home.

Also, dont bring along your laptop or other electronics unless its going to be with you at all times.
People will go through your suitcase and steal shit.

I dont know if its the same, but I worked as a hotel room cleaner... and believe me.
Some of the women I worked with who cleaned rooms also went through suitcases and things like that to be nosy and to stake out things they wanted to take.

That's awful! I'm going to be really paranoid when I stay in hotel rooms now!

I didnt mean to make anyone paranoid, but its the truth around here (and I live in a tourist trap).
Get a set of luggage locks, and you should be all set!

I've always been paranoid about that! It's never really been a question in my mind, though.. I've always been sure they do that. Which is why I always buy luggage that locks and I always put anything of worth in it and lock it up before we leave the room! :P.

People should check their countries regulations where things like that are concerned, here you wouldn't be allowed straightners, or any liquids above 100ml in your hand luggage.

I've taken straighteners in my hand luggage many a time and never been told to take them out. Unless it's changed since July last year.

They keep moving stuff about loads, one minute you can take liquids, then you can't, then you can, then oh you can't again.

I'm sure it hasn't. I usually fly at least once every couple of months or so, and have done for the past 4 years and I've never been told I can't carry my straighteners in my hand luggage. I've definitely taken them on board on flights with both Easy Jet and Fly Be in the past 6 weeks.

You can take straighteners on. I carried mine in my hand luggage on the last two flights I was on, both within the last 6 weeks. And on two different airlines.

Ah, it must of changed recently. When a friend came over from Ireland she wasn't allowed to take hers in hand luggage in January as they were considered a possible weapon!

Maybe that was an Irish thing then? I fly within the UK every 2-3 months as my parents live in Cardiff, and for exams etc, and I've never been told that I can't take my straighteners on.

It hapenned to me in Minnesota. They forgot to put my bag on the plane to London, when I connected there from Vegas. It got back to me about 5 days later. So irritating though!

I had my bag lost once when I was like 12. I got it 2 days later. So annoying, but it doesn't happen too often. Whatever you do, NEVER leave anything valuable inside. Keep it with you at all times.

I've never had a bag lost.

Of all the times I have flown with my family, I don't recall ever losing any luggage.. For 5 years, we used to do the 16-hour journey from Philippines to England and vice versa twice a year! So, from Philippines to Malaysia to Netherlands to England. Then vice versa going back to the Philippines! I don't ever recall us losing any suitcases during these journeys -maybe we were just very lucky because I've heard of people losing luggage here and there then having to have the hassle of trying to get it back!! Luggage was also fine when flying to America.. So, maybe it's just one of those chance things! Either you're lucky or unlucky but, mostly, you're lucky, methinks :)

Thanks for everyone's replies. =] It does make me feel better, and I think I will check my bag in. I was worried about the 3oz max of liquid cause I have things like my toner, and face wash and stuff like that.
