With what to do with a BA in English. I am English major now. I just transferred school. I was wondering if anyone had any luck actually getting a job in anything actually English related.

hahahahahahhahahaha. Welcome to the world of working but not using your degree! I graduated a year ago with my BA in English and I'm still working as a manager at Target. I've just come to terms with the fact that 5 years ago when I decided to pursue this degree it really wasn't a bad idea. Now, it's not such a great idea. I was originally going to get my BA and then go to grad school and get a teaching license and a Master of Arts in Teaching (or Education)...however that costs money so... I've scrapped that plan. I make decent money at Target now so, I'll stick with that and hopefully when we dig ourselves out of this horrible economic recession hole... I'll be able to get that license or find and editorial job that doesn't require 10 years of editing experience.

LOL. I completed a year and a half of a Masters in Drama. I realised by then that it was never gonna get me ANYWHERE! Haha so I am now doing Law - much harder, but with any luck I will be able to get a decent job this way!

I just wish I had enough money to go back to school and get my damn teaching license now. A lot of people have told me that I shouldn't think of the money I'm spending because in the end I'll be able to pay it back and yadda yadda. But I just can't do it. Of course if someone else is willing to pay... ;) hahaha. I also heard my University is actually going to have a 7% tuition hike this coming year! The highest it's ever been. The awesome President of the University was quoted in the local paper saying something about, "We're trying to make the University affordable." Because you know, that's what a tuition hike does!

I'm sort of considering getting a business degree to supplement my English Degree because my job has a 'tuition reimbursement program' and I believe that basically if you can prove that the course you're taking is related to owning or running a business then they'll pay for it. I just don't know if I'll even like courses like that.... OH the choices in life.

Consider teaching. I got my B.S. in Psychology in May 2007, entered grad school in January 2008, and I'll be done this December (so it'll be right under 2 years). I'll be certified for K-6, but you could do it with Secondary (middle/high school) in English.

oh, no! My bachelor's in Psychology has nothing to do with my Masters degree. it's just another example of a degree that one can't easily get a job with, like the BA in English. Once I knew I couldn't get a job related to it, I went back to school for my Master's of Elementary Education (which is about general education, not about psychology). Sorry for the confusion there :-P

I have to agree with ^. [/feels odd saying Beautiful Lies. Forgive me for assigning you as a caret] There's a lot of people that get degrees and go on to pursue irrelevant careers TO that degree. Seems like you need more education no matter what you do. Freelance writing doesn't really pay off until you're established. Not exactly the instant gratification methinks you want. :/

I have a BA in English. The beauty of one is that it improves your articulation and communication skills immensely (at least it did mine!), which are excellent qualities to prospective employees, so always make sure you sell them when trying to get a job!
I used mine to get into a fast-track journalism school. I'm not sure how journalism works in the USA, but over here you need to complete your NCTJs, which is what I did. Then I used that to get me some internships with papers and magazines. I've got one coming up in August. It hasn't yet led to full term employment! (but that's mainly because of the current recession. There are no jobs anwhere, let alone in journalism right now!) but one day it will help me out, yo!!! haha. So just keep looking and trying!

There's a trick to breaking into Journalism.
Befriend some interns (or become one) maybe a mail clerk, a personal assistance, and even a juice big shot themselves, which is could be quite a bit harder. by the goal is to get an inside scoop, to break a story..... to break into the business.

But you got to go where the action is at. Other wise a journalist is just someone that reads the news, and gives their opinion on other people's stories. ;D

Yeah, here's some advice. Get your teaching certificate, and teach.

Otherwise, you can ask, "Would you like fries with that" in a grammatically proper method.

Oh dear! What a depressing thread for someone like me who plans to start their English degree next September, lol.

I have been led to believe, by my future university, that there are many jobs that you can get with a BA in English, though they may not all be exactly subject related. A lot of jobs require you have a university education, not necessarily for the degree you studied, but for the skills and experiences you pick up at university. And there are some people (myself included) that just want a degree so that they can make enough money to support their families.

That being said, if I did want to go on to an English related career then it would probably be Journalism, Teaching, Publishing, Advertising, Writer, etc. I'll probably end up doing teaching so that my job fits better around my kids.

My wife has a BA in English, and she's hard pressed to find a job that utilizes her degree -- she works as an academic adviser at a charter school.
