A toddler is in a serious condition after being shot in the head when a man opened fire during a wedding reception in the US state of Indiana.

Police say the 18-month-old child, Yuridia Sosa, is in a critical condition in an Indianapolis hospital after undergoing surgery.

The child's mother, Mariela Rodriguez, and another woman were shot in the legs but are expected to recover.

USA Today reports three brothers, who were not invited to the wedding, got into a fight with guests at the reception hall in the Indianapolis community of Lawrence.

Witnesses said the men appeared to be looking for a fight.

At least two shots were fired as about 100 panicked wedding guests fled the building and ran into the surrounding park.

According to police officers, one of the alleged offenders, 21-year-old Francisco Ponce, ran across a parking lot and tossed a gun under the car.

Ponce has since been arrested on the preliminary charge of attempted murder.

Lawrence police detective Gary Woodruff said the whole event was just chaos.

"People were running in just every direction," he said.

"At one point they (the offenders) stood up, turned a table over and started a scuffle with some of the other reception attendees."

"And then Francisco introduces a handgun into the fight."

Ponce is being held without bond, according to court records.

It has been reported his Ponce's brother Isaias, 28, was charged with public intoxication, and a third brother, Jose, 23, was arrested on preliminary charges of battery, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

charming behaviour. i hope the girl recovers. what a crappy way to remember your wedding.

Incredible. How terribly frightening for everyone there. =( Open gunfire is the very last thing you'd expect at a wedding (or anywhere, really...). I hope the baby recovers. =(

I hate that the wedding was ruined, but I think the fact that a baby was shot in the head is much bigger of a deal. I hope this baby recovers. And they wonder why they wasn't invited to the wedding?? Ignorant thugs. We should just put all of them in one place so they can just kill each other so nobody as innocent as a baby has to die from their stupid behavior.

people are so dumb, they have absolutely no idea what they are doing when they decide to shoot people. they have no clue how it will effect people. big deal, you're mad, use your mind and talk about it, dont go waving guns around like stupid creatures. i have no patients for people like this. i bet they wont get jail time at all, nothing serious at least.

This is probably going to make tho pro anti gun activists just piss themselves with saying guns are bad and should be outlawed. I see it coming. People like that make people like me and my family and fiance look bad because we are responsible and sane and they aren't. How messed up to shoot a baby girl.

it's all very well to want more control over how restricted selling guns is, but how do we know if the guy even got it legally? plenty of stupid assholes can get guns other ways. it's the people that are responsible that get affected by laws like that. the dickheads that break those laws just continue to break them.

I don't see how anyone who owns a gun can be responsible, the whole purpose is to having something to shoot someone with!

Or something. Not all people who own guns go hunting for 'bigger game', so to say.

No. It's not. As a hand-gun owner, I can tell you that I own one for sport. To shoot at a range.
So you're very wrong.
