how realistic does a baby DOLL really need to be

A controversial new doll is leaving some parents wishing for the good old Cabbage Patch days.

A Spanish toymaker known as Berjuan has developed a breast-feeding doll that comes with a special halter top its young "mothers" wear as they pretend to breast-feed their "babies." The halter top has daisies that cover the little girls’ nipples and come undone just as easily as the flaps of a nursing bra would.

The doll — called Bebe Gloton, which translates as “gluttonous baby” — makes sucking noises as it "feeds."

Like many other dolls, Bebe Gloton can cry, signaling she wants more milk.

Although many health care providers promote the benefits of breast-feeding, parents around the world have criticized Berjuan, saying the idea of breast-feeding is too grown-up for young children -- and may even promote early pregnancy.

Dr. Manny Alvarez, managing health editor of FOXNews.com, said although he supports the idea of breast-feeding, he sees how his own daughter plays with dolls and wonders if Bebe Gloton might speed up maternal urges in the little girls who play it.

“Pregnancy has to entail maturity and understanding,” Alvarez said. “It’s like introducing sex education in first grade instead of seventh or eighth grade. Or, it could inadvertently lead little girls to become traumatized. You never know the effects this could have until she’s older.”

Alvarez said breast-feeding reduces childhood infections, strengthens maternal bonding and increases the child’s immune system. But introducing breast-feeding to girls young enough to play with dolls seems inappropriate, he said.

My 4 year old pretends to breastfeed her teddy's because I'm breastfeeding her 6 month old sister. She does look a bit shy when she does it like she's not sure if she should do it or not. lol.
I doubt a child that wasn't exposed to breast feeding would spontaniously start simulating it with a doll. I'm really not sure what my opinion is on the appropriateness of this doll.

I don't really agree that breasts weren't "made" to be sexual. They serve a duel function. They attract men so that we may procreate and further the species.
If they weren't "made" to be sexual then men wouldn't be sexually attracted to them.

Haha I find that amusing. But it really irritates me how everywhere is so pro breast feeding. Some women can't breast feed for various reasons and I know it would make me super pissed off if everyone kept pushing the notion onto me.

It's the people that refuse to try breastfeeding or think it's obscene, unhygenic or dirty that irritate the breastfeeding nazis. Women who genuinely can't do it, or who lose their supply would get all the sympathy in the world from me - not that I count myself a boob nazi, lol.

I had my friend tell me it was disgusting and took up too much time. I wonder if she'll still be saying that when she's heating up bottles at 2am, lol

i guess i can see the good and bad in this. breastfeeding is becoming more and more common these days... but a kids' doll? i mean, my daughter is sits next to me and watches me breastfeed her younger brother, but i don't know if i would necessarily want her to pretend breastfeed her dolls.

I was brought up with breastfeeding, my mum breastfed all my 5 younger siblings and I used to 'play' breastfeeding, but I also used to give my Tiny Tears doll a bottle, so you know...works either way. Can't say it's traumatised me, lol. I breastfeed my baby boy now, and it feels the most natural thing in the world.

I'm by no means an uptight, conservative sort of person, but why is this being produced? I don't think my 5 year old needs to have a plastic doll suckling off of her. ;D I couldn't imagine the little girl doing this sort of thing in public. You don't want to think about it, but there are some sick people out there. I think, while being honest and educating my children about the body, I would most definitely skip out on this one. That's just too much. :/

Breasts aren't made to be a sexual thing anyways. They have a purpose just like every other organ does in our body, to produce breast milk to feed babies. I would buy this doll for Jordyn if she wanted it. Breastfeeding is a natural thing, and acting like it is something that should be hidden makes it seem wrong. How would this promote sex or early pregnancy? I don't get what they are talking about. We have baby dolls that wet their diaper, drink from a bottle, cry, giggle, and everything else..so what's the difference?. My daughter has a doll that moves her mouth and makes a sucking sound when you put her pacifier or bottle in her mouth. Nobody thinks that is so bad, but because it is a breastfeeding one instead of a bottle feeding one it's different?

I only think the 'big deal' with this is the actual involvement between the child and the doll. It's one thing to suckle on a pacifier and a breast (in any stage of development). The top with the nipple covers is what made me raise an eyebrow. Yes, breastfeeding is natural and I agree with that. While breasts weren't made to be sexual objects by function by many personal views they are sexual. Not that I really got the point of diaper-wetting/suckling dolls in the first place, but to each their own when deciding which toy is appropriate. You do have good points though.

I disagree with you here. I believe like the above noter that breasts do hold a duel purpose. One to be pleasurable to our mates and the other to give nutrition to our children.

I am very torn about this. I would NEVER allow my daughter to buy this toy; but yet would buy it for myself if I was needing some practice for my next child.

Is there no other link that is in english?

Well I guess it's all a matter of opinion if they are for "pleasure" because some say they are attracted to butts, lips, etc and all of them have a specific purpose, but just because some men think of them in a sexual way does that mean that they are? No, because or lips, butt, breasts, etc all have a certain purpose. Our vagina was the only part of our body made purposely for sexual pleasure. It's all just how you look at it.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with this. People need to let go of this stigma they have about breastfeeding, and maybe, just maybe, this doll will help future generations do exactly that.

I don't think it's as much of a stigma - that is why, for example, asking a woman to stop breastfeeding her child in public is illegal - but more of a matter of age appropriateness. As the article stated, the target audience for this doll simply isn't old enough to comprehend motherhood and the mother-child bond (which breastfeeding promotes). In fact, when I first read the article, I thought it was a doll developed for young women who were having trouble breastfeeding, to help them get used to it, and not for a child's toy. xD

Little girls who have been breastfeed or who have regularly been witness to breastfeeding can actually be found "acting" breastfeeding to their dolls already. I don't think it's age inappropriate at all.

aha, its funny that you mentioned the young women thing, because when i read this i thought "okay. maybe not for young girls but this would be perfect for new mothers while their still pregnant to simulate breastfeeding." my mom told me she was terrified when she had to breastfeed me (her first child) because she didn't know what the heck she was supposed to be doing. this could really help the confusion and encourage breastfeeding in young or new mothers.

While I breastfed my son and plan to breastfeed my future child(ren), I dont feel like a doll like this would be approperate for my daughter. However, she is 7 and understands a little more about breastfeeding, and the benefits to the baby (she was never shy to tell people all about breastfeeding, childbirth, etc...she's a very educated child). I think giving this to a child who is 3 or 4 years old doesnt even know or understand the concept of breasts let alone what their purposes are for.

I rate this a thumbs down lol.

I hope no one takes this the wrong way, but maybe breasts have a THIRD function. At least, I like to think so. I agree that they are meant to be used for feeding a baby. I also agree they are good for attracting men. Or women, if that's what one prefers. But has anyone ever stopped to think about our OWN pleasure? How many women like it when their partner pays attention to their breasts, in one form or another?

As for the doll, I have a bit of mixed feelings. I think breastfeeding is a wonderful thing; healthier, better bonding experience, etc. I would do my best breastfeeding my children when the time comes. However, I think a breastfeeding baby doll is much too personal. It's one thing to have a doll pee out water, but to have a doll make sucking noises when you put it up to a nipple sensor on your breast? Girls that young don't even really have breasts! Don't get me wrong, I think it would be a great teaching tool for later on, like in high school where you get those mechanical babies, but for a young girl, I think not.

I'm not a parent, but this is how I feel.
