I've never been to America, to be honest nothing has ever really attracted me to go there.
I live in Australia, I've never heard anything good about the place (from people that have been there). I've talked to a few Americans here and most have been ok with me though. When I read the beginning of this thread, I immediately thought of the song 'Do the Evolution' by Pearl Jam, so maybe thats what I really think about it. Even though the video clip (below) has references to other countries aswell. I only thought of America. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvqoF-uhQnQ&feature=fvst |

I am American, born and raised in California. It's not a bad place at all. Of course there are a few things to complain about it, but what country doesn't have its drawbacks? Just like some people mentioned, there are some places I would never visit ever. No names mentioned though. Overall, I think its a pretty great place to live, better then some places in the world.

I don't think you're human if you have nothing to complain about. There is no unanimous vote of total and utter agreement. Nowhere. I'm sure if I lived somewhere else there would be complaints about the government or any other policy in that country. And then I'd dig a hole in the ground and make one of those awesome homes they have on the Travel Channel or something. I don't mind living in the US. Learn how to take things with a grain of salt. I definitely tease about being a 'stupid American' when I don't happen to know something about global news. >>

TOTALLY NOT THE CASE. I am currently studying US Government & being the high school drop out that I was when I was younger, going back to school, taking US History all over again, & reading this book about US government, well there's so much to read & to learn!!! Some of it I agree with (government, laws, ect) and other parts of it I do not agree with. Anyway, a lot of what I have been reading about (mostly politics & laws & such) has made me feel confused about whether or not I can say that I am truly 100% proud to be an American but also, the history of America (as boring as it may be to some) is absolutely fascinating to me. Now & then, I tend to get a lot of shit for being a "stupid" or "fat" or "lazy" American (which I am not anything of that sort to be completely honest) just because I was born & raised here. Sterotypical opinions, but they do tend to make me wonder... what is so bad about America? I'm sure that there are far better places to live than the USA but why do I hear so many people bagging on my country? I'm not saying that America is perfect or close to being the best country in the world, all I want to know is what people think about the USA. P.S. For those of you who have stated that they think that I created this thread to stir up drama & what not, do yourself a favor & stop trying 2 read in between the lines... there's nothing there so please stop straining your eyes. -Thanks! :D :D :D |

OH - HAHA, DID YOU ACTUALLY WANT A SERIOUS ANSWER, YO? LIKE, I CAN TELL YOU SOME OF THE STEREOTYPES AND GENERALISED BRITISH FEELINGS ABOUT AMERICA - ALTHOUGH LAST TIME I DID THAT, AT MOD CHRIS'S REQUEST, ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE IN THE CHAT ROOM! LIKE, THERE ARE A LOT OF NEGATIVE FEELINGS TOWARDS THE US, AND SOME WITH GOOD REASON. PERSONALLY I DON'T HATE THE AMERICANS - I HAVE LOADSA AMERICAN FRIENDS ONLINE - BUT I DO LIKE TO WIND THEM UP BY SAYING THEY ARE FAT AND STUPID, YO (ALTHOUGH MY FRIENDS DON'T TEND TO BE THE ONES WHO GET WOUND UP, YO! IT'S THE OTHER ONES!)! ;D

THERE ARE THINGS A CERTAIN MOD CHRIS WOULD NOT LIKE TO REMEMBER, AND BEING ON A PERMANENT LADY-SOURCE-PERIOD WHILE BEING A MOD IS ONE OF THEM.
SO, as an EX-mod, you should tell us some of the stereotypes and generaliZed feelings about America. There's your start. |
Estella Post Count: 1779 |
ACTUALLY, MOD CHRIS, YOU WERE NOT AMONGST THOSE FROM WHOM ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE. YOU ASKED AS A GENUINE QUESTION, YOU WERE INTERESTED IN THE ANSWER, AND YOU WERE EMBARRASSED ON BEHALF OF YOUR FELLOW AMERICANS FOR THEIR 'OMG THAT JUST PROVES THAT AMERICA IS THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD AND YOU'RE A RETARD FROM A RETARDED [SORRY, MAKE THAT 'RETARTED'!] COUNTRY' RESPONSES TO ME! ;D
|
Chris Post Count: 1938 |
Well you see, I have a hard time remembering these things, because when Lady Source gets a hardcore period, things just go blank.
Blank. It happens once every 5 years. |
Estella Post Count: 1779 |
WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE ADDED TO THE AUNTIE FLO DIARY, YO? IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE IN DIRE NEED OF IT! ;D
|
Chris Post Count: 1938 |
I'd only be posting to it once every 5 years. :(

BUT, SINCE YOU ARE ASKING AGAIN, HERE ARE SOME OF THE STEREOTYPES AND GENERALISED FEELINGS, YO. ONCE MORE, THESE ARE NEGATIVE (BUT COMMONLY HELD) STEREOTYPES, AND DO NOT NECESSARILY REFLECT PUCK'S BELIEFS - BUT NATURALLY ONCE MORE I AWAIT HELL TO BREAK LOOSE, AND FOR MULTIPLE PUCK HATERZ TO ARISE! ;D
1. AMERICAS ARE REALLY INTO THEIR FEELINGS, AND CAN'T BEAR IT IF ANYONE HURTS THEIR FEELINGS. THEY WILL HAVE COUNSELLING FOR SEVERAL YEARS IF SOMEONE, SAY, CALLS THEM A FATTY. IN FACT, THEY WILL USE THEIR COUNSELLING AS A REASON TO NEVER HAVE TO TAKE RESPONSIBLITY FOR ANYTHING. 2. AMERICANS HAVE NICE MUSHY POSITIVE PLATITUDES FOR EVERYTHING. IF LIFE HANDS YOU LEMONS, MAKE LEMONADE, YO! (ALTHOUGH NATURALLY HAVE SEVERAL YEARS OF COUNSELLING FOR YOUR LEMONS AND DRAW EVERYONE'S ATTENTION TO YOUR LEMONS AND YOUR LEMONADE SO THAT THEY CAN SEE YOU AS A BIG BRAVE VICTIM, YO!). 3. AMERICANS THINK THEIR COUNTRY IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD. THEY CANNOT COMPREHEND THAT OTHER COUNTRIES DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY OR HAVE DIFFERENT VALUES, AND THEREFORE THEY ASSUME THOSE COUNTRIES ARE STUPID AND INFERIOR. 4. AMERICANS ARE RATHER IGNORANT OF THE REST OF THE WORLD, YO. 5. ON A MORE POLITICAL LEVEL, AMERICANS TRY TO DOMINATE EVERY COUNTRY - USING FINANCIAL POWER TO OBLITERATE DIFFERENT COUNTRIES' INDIVIDUALITY AND UNIQUENESS. GETTING THEIR MACDONALDS DUMPED INTO EVERY COUNTRY THEY CAN. 6. AMERICANS SEE LIFE IN TERMS OF GETTING MORE MONEY. MONEY IS EVERYTHING TO AMERICANS. THEY DON'T CARE HOW RUDE, TRASHY, IGNORANT THEY ARE - ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS MONEY. (AND FOOD. AND THEIR FEELINGS!) 7. AMERICANS HAVE AN OVER-INFLATED SENSE OF THEIR OWN IMPORTANCE. 8. AMERICANS WILL BARGE INTO OTHER COUNTRIES' PROBLEMS, WHEN THE OTHER COUNTRIES DON'T EVEN WANT THEM TO, AND TRY TO INFLICT THEIR OWN VALUES ON THESE COUNTRIES WHILE SELF-RIGHTEOUSLY BELIEVING THEY ARE DOING THE COUNTRY A GREAT BIG FAVOUR, AND PATTING THEMSELVES ON THE BACK. 9. AMERICANS ARE A BIT PARANOID AND WIMPISH AND OVERREACT TERRIBLY TO THINGS LIKE SWINE FLU (OR THE YEAR 2000'S ARRIVAL, OR POTENTIAL TERRORISTS). THEY BUY THEMSELVES GAS MASKS, STOCK UP ON FOOD AND WATER TO EXTREME DEGREES, AND INVENT ALL KINDS OF THINGS TO CREATE THE ILLUSION OF SAFETY. 10. AMERICANS ARE CHILDISH, LIKE UNRULY CHILDREN, YO! |
Chris Post Count: 1938 |
1. This is hardcore true. We tend to automatically assume every discussion is an argument, and everyone but us are opponents that need to be killed (or just "internet pwnd").
2. Also hardcore true. The only reason we make "lemonade" is so we can appear as the big brave victim. The entire daytime television schedule is dedicated to talk shows with famous people stroking the egos of the big brave victims of weight loss or abuse. 3/4. This is actually not so true anymore. After 9/11, everyone's feelings were hurt, but that feeling is dropping faster than Republican support after GWB. 5. True. 6. This is true for a single group of people in America - the upper class. Usually when you hear about famous people rising to the top, there's always a story in the shadows about how they stepped on their friends and family to get there. The higher-middle class, you'll find, are the most humble people. The middle and lower, you tend to find the entitled, bitchy, and brave victims. 7. Depends on whether or not they spend their time watching day time talk shows dedicated to telling them how special they are. 8. This has been true, but it's always helped our cause up until Vietnam. But from Vietnam until today, the country's always been split down the middle about it. I would call that an American stereotype, but you'll only find that in America. 9. Hardcore true. 10. NO U |
Acid Fairy Post Count: 1849 |
Oh well said Puck! Haha. As much as I know they aren't true for all Americans, I believe they must be true for a lot!

"4. AMERICANS ARE RATHER IGNORANT OF THE REST OF THE WORLD, YO."
I found this one interesting because it is disconcertingly true for high school students (at least in my area, southern East Coast). I feel like the school system doesn't do near enough of a good job in teaching about other cultures or countries. We learn the bare-bare-bare-bare minimum it seems, even for the other large and important countries (especially the English-speaking ones!). I work at learning these things on my own, like the government and politics of other countries. My classmates, however, are infuriatingly ignorant of anything outside our borders! I spend a lot of time online browsing sites like these, where I interact with other cultures. So I pick up things like accidentally writing "colour" on my English paper or saying "bloody". You wouldn't believe how many people can't identify where that comes from; they think I'm crazy! The epitome of ignorance with them is religion. My classmates seem to be under the delusion that Protestant Christianity is the only sane religion and Islam or Judaism (or even Catholicism) is simply absurd. Sorry for ranting out on you. You just sparked one of those deep-rooted annoyances. And if any Americans are reading this, what are your areas like? Or is or was your high school/college? I want to know if this is a Stupid Southerner thing, or if it is a Stupid American thing. ;D |

I hear just as many stories about when Americans go to Britain and they don't have a clue what we mean. My classmates seem to be under the delusion that Protestant Christianity is the only sane religion and Islam or Judaism (or even Catholicism) is simply absurd That is the purpose of having a religion. Catholics think Protestant Christianity is absurd, as do the muslims. Why are we being attacked and they being uplifted? Your ideas are absurd. |
wugs Post Count: 96 |
Sure, absurd is the wrong word. How about "My classmates are intolerant of other non-Protestant Christian religions"? They absolutely detest learning about anything other than what they are! They criticize absolutely everything, say, Muslims do (such as how they look when they pray), without thinking about how they must look splashing water on themselves and calling it holy.
