How does the ingredients coming from one country make it healthy or safe? Do you only eat food with ingredients produced in the US? I know I eat plenty of fruit grown outside the UK!

Glucose in pet food would obviously be bad, but I don't think you can assume that because the ingredients come from other countries it must be unhealthy.

The brand of cat food I usually buy from the supermarket it says on the tin that it contains no artifical flavours or preservatives. I've actually just looked on their website, and they apparently also do an organic range (although I've not seen it sold in the supermarket).

i think a lot of people (at least in the US) will only by "made in the USA" products. mostly bc a lot of the recalls on foods and treats were from countries like china.

And so do these people avoid chocolate? Or are cocoa beans produced in the US and I'm unaware of it?

lol, i doubt they care. though i don't know if choc has a lot of recalls on it or not. but we've had a lot of recalls here lately.
but then again, i read every ingrediant label for what i give my dog, but i barely ever read labels on anything i buy. *shrugs* silly i know.

that's awesome! dog food here has to be approved for pets, but it's no where near human grade food (though there are brands that go above and beyond to make it human grade)

i agree. most dog (and cat) foods are pretty much crap today.
we keep our dog and cats on a grain free, holistic food. even though individual bags are heaper, we actually spend less a year on food bc we don't have to feed him as much. (my 90lb dog needs about 3 cups a food a day, compared to a commercial brand dog food where he owuld need upwards of 7.)

riley does have pet insurance though as well. mostly bc in his breed his life span is only 7 years due to cancers, joint problems etc. i neer want to be faced with the dilema of not having enough money to care for him

But what is your reasoning for saying they're crap? Have you read actual evidence somewhere that they're harmful?

I agree pet insurance is very sensible. Because animals can get sick, just like people can, regardless of their diet (although obviously obese animals are more likely to have health problems). My cat would have cost me hundreds - thousands of £s if I hadn't had insurance (just because he had an eye infection, then a urinary obstruction). And his urinary obstruction could just as likely have occurred if he was on some sort of organic cat food (if it was dry food anyway). Had nothing to do with the content of the food... just the lack of water in dry food (and the fact he doesn't drink much).

not harmful, just not healthy. dog foods now-a days are filled with fillers like corn, Oat Hulls, Rice Hulls, Wheat Middlings, and Cellulose. they have tons of grains and veggies, and very little (if any) meat. most of the time they only have meat-by products, and although they aren't bad for your dog to eat, then need the nutrients from the actual meat part of the animal too.
they tend to have flavor enhancers like Sugar, Sorbitol, Cane Molasses, Fructose, and Corn Syrup are all sweeteners. As yummy as candy and sweet stuff is, dogs don’t need that junk. Sweeteners can lead to obesity, Diabetes, and tooth decay.
they add chemicals to the dog food (new research is coming out saying these chemicals have been linked to cancer)
artifical coloring, preservitives, and synthetic vit K are all chemicals that have been linked to cancer.

edit to my post: i guess depending on the specific food, it can be harmful. just depends what food you pick.

My cat's food is free from artificial flavours and preservatives (I wouldn't want to feed my pet sweeteners either, and I'm aware of the associated health problems). Maybe they're just stricter in the UK about what they're allowed to put in pet food though. :P

they prob are. dog food (cat food here) tends to be crap. it's mostly corn, artifical colors and by products.
there are great foods out there though, most people don't have a clue about it though.

My cats like weird things. Leo loves plastic bag handles (I try to discourage that, but he sometimes manages to find a bag somewhere). Hunter loves pumpkin. Gypsy likes fanta and tea. All three like cockroaches and spiders.
My dogs... they eat whatever they can get a hold of :P I caught Floyd trying to eat a dvd case not long ago. And Byron LOVES raw carrots. He will take a raw carrot over a big juicy marrow bone... weirdo.

Our cat loves marmite, she has eaten toothpaste before which made her foam at the mouth for ages.

My cat likes strawberry yogurts, crisps and butter. Not that he's allowed any of these things, but I have to be careful not to leave them lying about or his tongue will be in them! ;D

My cat, Midget likes eating used condoms (don't use those anymore ;)), balloons, pacifiers, rubber bands, and stuffed animals.

My youngest cat likes to eat marshmellows. My boyfriend's cat, who had to be put down in October, also LOVED marshmellows.

When we were cat-sitting my brother's cat, I found out that she loves butter.

My oldest cat likes to eat potato chips, and anything else that is salty.

The boyfriend's German Shepard will eat pretty much anything..including underwear. Yeah, that did happen...;D.

our dog doesn't really eat anything weird that i can think of. he likes to eat grass, my shoes, and sticks, but what dog doesn't?
our one cat persephone doesn't eat weird things either.
our other cat, cora, now she's the bad one!!! she LOVEs fruit, whenever my fiance is eating any she sticks her nose on it to smell it. she also steals straws out of the pantry, and loves my hair elastics.

o wait! one time while walking riley through the woods, he found a used condom and picked it up. ed had to reach into his mouth and take it out. UGH! makes me want to vomit.
and another time when i was walking riley he pooped out a condom (TMI) it was the sickest thing. like he did one poop, and 1/2 the condom came out, then he pooped again and the rest came out.
he probably stole that one from the waste basket in our room.
so i guess my dog has a sick condom fetish.

I don't let my dog eat any human food or anything because he has to be on a strict diet. He used to be on an all natural, raw meat diet and REALLY thrived on it but it's too expensive to feed so he's back on kibble. But starting next year, he'll be back on raw (since we'll be raising our own meat).

However, when Spike somehow gets to human food, he goes crazy over vegetables. He will scarf down carrots, broccoli, asparagus, to name a few.

Forgot to mention-he HATES peanut butter. I have to stuff his medicine in dog treats because he REFUSES to eat peanut butter. I've never met a dog that didn't like peanut butter.
