ACTUALLY, SERIOUSLY, I THINK YOU ARE RIGHT. I LEARNT TO SPELL FROM SEEING WORDS CONSISTENTLY SPELT CORRECTLY IN BOOKS. HAD I GROWN UP ON THE INTERNET CHATTING WITH PEOPLE WHO COULDN'T SPELL (ESPECIALLY ADULTS!) I THINK I WOULD HAVE LEARNT WRONG SPELLINGZ. BUT OF COURSE THIS IS NOT CONFINED TO BLOOP - IT'S AN INTERNET WIDE PROBLEM.

Same. The kids at school who did the best in spelling tests were always the ones who read the most.
Now they are teaching kids to spell phonetically - and oh dear. A seven year old I know spelt drawings as 'drorings'. Cringe. |

HAHA - GOSH, THE NAUGHTY AMERICANS MAKE FUN OF US BRITS FOR PRONOUNCING 'DRAWINGS' LIKE THAT, YO! THEY HAVE MIKE MYERS PLAYING A ENGLISH CHARACTER WHO SITS IN THE BATH SINGING 'HELLO, MY NAME IS SIMON AND I LIKE TO DO DRORINGS'.
|
Acid Fairy Post Count: 1849 |
How else do you pronounce it?!
|
Estella Post Count: 1779 |
WITH A 'W', YO, NOT AN 'R'. EVEN SOME POSH BRITS PRONOUNCE IT LIKE THAT. WHEN THE AMERICANS SAY IT, THE FIRST HALF RHYME WITH 'HOW', AND THE SECOND PART IS 'WING'.
|
foreverglow Post Count: 217 |
the first half doesnt rhyme w/ 'how' for me. draw - like STRAW .... ings. lol
|
Estella Post Count: 1779 |
BUT THEN YOUR 'STRAW' MIGHT SOUND LIKE AN ENGLISH 'HOW'. ;D 'STRAW' RHYMES WITH 'STORE' FOR US, YO!
|
Makayla Post Count: 751 |
Are you serious? I'm sitting here trying to make "straw" rhyme with "store" and I can't for the life of me. I must hear this! I wrote an entry a little while back about accents, I was going to record my voice and let bloopers tell me about my accent. But I never did, we must do this!
|
Estella Post Count: 1779 |
TOTALLY SERIOUS, YO. ASK ANY ENGLISH PERSON. WE USE THE VOWEL SOUND WHICH IS THE BACK-TO-FRONT 'C' IN THE IPA, YO. HERE. THE AMERICANS OFTEN USE THIS SOUND TO REPRESENT AN 'O' AS IN 'HOT', BUT WE ENGLISH HAVE ANOTHER SOUND FOR THAT, YO - THE ONE THAT IS DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH IT ON THE VOWEL CHART.

Transit Post Count: 1096 |
I say for straw, stror, for store I say stor.
|
Transit Post Count: 1096 |
I'm going to try to do a video entry where I saw straw and store, exciting!
|
Acid Fairy Post Count: 1849 |
How can straw NOT rhyme with store?! How do you say it?
|
Transit Post Count: 1096 |
I've done an education entry about straw and store!
|
Acid Fairy Post Count: 1849 |
Haha - educating the Americans on English pronunciation ;D
|
Estella Post Count: 1779 |
ACID FAIRY, YOU MUST MAKE A YOUTUBE TOO, YO! I WANT TO HEAR YOUR VOICE TALKING ABOUT STORES, STRAWS AND DRAWINGS!
AND EVERYONE ELSE, YO! AMERICANZ - GO DO AN ENTRY AND PROVE PUCK WRONG WHEN SHE SAYS YOU HAVE A 'W' SOUND IN 'DRAWINGS'! |
Makayla Post Count: 751 |
Straw rhymes with rhymes with law to me. The "aw" sounds the same at the end of each word. I say the "str" in "straw" to sounds the same as the "str" in "stride" to me. So announciated out it is like Stru-awhh.

I have to completely disagree with this. The way I pronounce it, it comes out more like "drah-ings". I can't think of anyone who ends drawings with "wings".
Also, straw and draw rhyme, but they don't rhyme with how. They rhyme more with "ah". Granted, this might just be in my part of the US. Go to New York or the South and you'd probably get a different pronunciation. |
Estella Post Count: 1779 |
TO GET FROM AN 'AH' TO AN 'I' SOUND, YO, YOU'D BE MAKING A SOUND LIKE 'EYE', UNLESS THERE WAS SOME FORM OF CONSONANT IN THE MIDDLE. I'D SAY IT'S PROBABLY A LOOSE SORT OF 'W' SOUND. OTHERWISE THE WORD WOULD SOUND LIKE 'DRYING'. OR DOES IT SOUND A BIT LIKE 'DRYING'? SEE, NORMALLY, THE TWO WORDS ARE DISTINGUISHED, BY DRYING BEING 'DRAH-YING' AND 'DRAWING' BEING 'DRAH-WING'. AND TO GO FROM 'AH' TO 'W', YOU MAKE A SOUND WHICH IS LIKE A POSH ENGLISH 'OW' IN 'HOW' - BUT IT PROBABLY WOULDN'T SOUND ANYTHING LIKE HOW YOU SAY 'HOW'. BUT LADY ACID FAIRY IS ENGLISH, YOU SEE, SO I AM USING ENGLISH APPROXIMATIONS FOR HER.

I end drawings with "wings". I say the first syllable to rhyme with "straw" and then put "wings" on the end.
|
Acid Fairy Post Count: 1849 |
Do you actually say draw-wings? I can't imagine that!
|
Estella Post Count: 1779 |
LISTEN TO THE AMERICAN MAN SAYING 'DRAWING', YO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWPt0l_Drio&feature=fvw
SOMETIMES HE SAYS IT 'DROH-WING' AND OTHER TIMES HE SAYS 'DRAU-WING'. NEVER 'DRORING' THOUGH. HE SAYS 'SUMPLE' FOR 'SIMPLE' TOO. AND 'THE YEAR' FOR 'THE EAR'. |

I pronounce it with a W! And I'm not posh. I don't think Scots say 'drorings'. I think that's an English thing. :P
