the spanish breastfeeding rate is really really low. i cant remember the exact figures but its something like 63% start breastfeeding and then a huge percentage of that drop out in the first two weeks. The hospitals promote breastfeeding but the GPs and grandparents do not. They're working really hard to promote it and its been raising 10% every 10 years... the big trouble here is that they are still in the era where grandparents know best, and when breastfeeding doesn't work out so easy they say , 'just give them a bottle'... like with low weight babies etc the GPs say the same...not realising that it can ruin a breastfeeding relationship altogether.
My 20 month old breastfeeds her dolls, which is normal, as she is still breastfed. Her dolls don't have bottles and dummies as she does not (though she'll probably have a feed and wet doll as she gets older if she wants one), its not weird that she breastfeeds her doll.. its normal for her.
Breasts are ment for 2 purposes for sure, otherwise they'd be flat like apes are.. only swelling with the milk.... the problem is society's view that breasts are only sexual objects i think. people getting offended by boobs annoys me, feeding children is part of what they were made for and people need to get over it!!

having said that... does a kid really need a special breastfeeding top?!! probably not!! promote using the imagination!

But the biggest argument against this that I'm seeing is based on the sexual aspect of the breast. But how many girls in the target age group for this doll know anything other than Mommies have breasts and breasts feed babies? As far as those little girls are concerned, there is nothing sexual about them, they're just there to feed.

The opposition for this doll comes from ADULT perceptions of the breast, not CHILD perceptions of the breast.

Hehe I always remember losing my bottles to my baby dolls, so I'd "feed" them with a spoon.

Oh and to add a point, most mums who have children VERY young (ie under 16) seem to end up bottle feeding anyway so not sure how breastfeeding a doll would promote underage pregnancy.

I would not hesitate to buy this doll for my daughter! I think it's great. We need to create a more positive attitude towards breastfeeding in this country. I'm tired of the uneducated garbage I hear about breasts being "dirty" when used to feed our children. We are too civilized a culture to harbor such immature beliefs, in my opinion.

And as far as leading to teenage pregnancy - I have NO idea how this doll makes pregnancy any more appealing than do the variety of dolls already on the market!

Mothers are encouraged to breastfeed, but at the same time it's subtly discouraged because people do tend to feel like the breasts are mostly or even purely for sexual enjoyment, thus the "dirty" aspect of it. So while the medical community does encourage it, the public tends to discourage it, sometimes without even realizing it.
