Making fun of a situation or about a situation is one thing, but making fun of people in those situations is another. I'm kind of the same way. I had a friend who was raped as well, and for awhile you couldn't even mention the word or topic without her getting upset over it, but now she's pretty much healed, and she'll crack jokes on the subject all the time, but not when it involves people, and it's specific on how the people are involved (the "she deserved" kind of humor is a big fat nono, but if playing around with friends or something, it's totally hilarious.)

The assumption of stupidity or lack of knowledge.
For instance, some one, instead of asking me if I know about something - just flat out assuming I don't and taking it upon ones self to "educate" me. I also find smokers who don't respect the people around them offensive. But not much you can do about that. And I find jehovah witnesses and mormons offensive when they door knock and don't take no for an answer. |

It used to really bother me when people assumed I didn't know stuff too. But I think I got too arrogant to care. My reaction now is: "Bless this poor mite's heart! He/she think he knows more than ME! Let's play along!" hahahaha ;D

Try having one side of your family Mormon and trying for YEARS to convert you. Hahahahaha. I don't know how many times I either wanted to punch them or myself in the face because they would NOT give up. They thought I needed to be "saved".

I have a side that are Jehovah Witnesses... they would love for us all to convert, however know that preaching at us is just pointless. They respect our stance!

I wish mine would take a hint but they STILL haven't given up. I respect everyone's religion but not when it's being shoved in my face. What part of your family are Jehovah Witnesses?

*growls*
Yeah, I hate that. When people find out I'm not Christian and make it their mission to save my soul. I haven't known any Mormons since I was 12, so I don't really have an opinon on that, and have had very few encounters with Jehovah's witnesses. We once had one show up at our house when I was little *waaaaaaaaaaay out in the boonies!!!* and my foster mother was just like, "Have a cookie, now go away." But I've never had any Jews or Muslims try and tell me that my religion was wrong. Its only Christians. And certainly not all of them *or I'd be short quite a few friends right now!* but the ones that DO irritate the hell out of me. Especially if they know I was raised Christian, because its like, I've been there, done that, and it wasn't right for me! Respect that! |

My ex boyfriend was a Jehovah's Witness, it was how he was brought up in the foster home he was at and HATED it. He tells me that he used to love it when people would slam the door in his face because that meant he wouldn't have to talk to them. Lol. I can't remember the last time I've have LDS or JW's come to my door although I see them all around my town--sounds mean, but they are SO easy to pick out of a crowd.
I never really understood why people feel the need to pressure others into something that they clearly are NOT interested in--especially when it comes to religion. I truly believe that it shouldn't matter what people think of you, if you believe in God then that's all that matters--it's no one else's place to tell you where you're going if you don't believe in him. I could go on about this but I'm afraid I might catch heat now LOL. |

i'm with blue bella in that it offends me when people assume i'm an idiot. my boyfriend feels the need to educate me on everything even though i repeatedly tell him i freaking know already!

Why do generalisations offend people? That seems to be something that gets most of you riled up!
I'm a man, generalisations about men don't offend me. I was a young parent, generalisations about young parents don't offend me. I'm straight, generalisations about straight people don't offend me. I'm white, generalisations about white people don't offend me... I could go on all day! haha. If someone is making sweeping generalisations, it says more about them than it says about you. It is also a chance to educate them, and say, "Well... if this is true, I'm an exception to the rule, because..." And if they still insist on their generalisation? Then you can have a good giggle about them and be glad you are not them! ;D |

Yeah generalisations (gosh long word) don't much offend me either. I think they affected me more at school cos I was the weird goth girl and so got bullied for that but since then it's not a big deal!

I agree with this one, if people choose to put me in a category or assume things about me that are untrue I don't particularly care. Normally I don't notice!

I agree with Shannon, it's generalisations and stereotyping which offend me. That, and ignorance, particularly with relation to religious and cultural differences. Oh, and people who are ungrateful when you've spent your time trying to help them.

Not much offends me, unless something is said to me as a personal insult. For the most part certain words don't offend me like they do other people. Like others said though, I get offended when I am treated like a moron just because I'm working at a cash register. It blows my mind how many people are so ignorant that they assume it's acceptable to not say 'hello' or give me any sort of response, as if I'm a robot rather than a human. One thing that I guess does offend me is when I'm at work and other women (usually older women) say things like 'Oh is there a man around to help?' when myself or other women I work with are perfectly capable of assisting them with their heavy lifting or electronic questions.

I work in a billing office and answer the switchboard for the entire hospital I work in, and I hate more than ANYTHING when people refuse to talk to me about their bills (even though I'M IN BILLING), because I'm just "the idiot who answers the phone". I get that ALL the time.

I so knokw how you feel. I work at the counter at the YMCA, and it bugs me to no end when I greet them and get no response, or like when they're leaving and I say 'have a nice day!' and they say NOTHING, lol. BAH!

im only, really, truly offended,
when my rights as a human being, and american; get thrown aside and trampled. that really grinds my gears! |
The Ryan Post Count: 415 |
It's interesting that you say "rights as a human being, and american" as if they are two separate things! ;D Do you believe that Americans should have more rights than other nationalities? Or that your rights depend upon you being an American to claim them?
I'm genuinely intrigued! |
