THERE ARE SOME AMERICANS FOR WHOM 'CAUGHT' AND 'COT' SOUND EXACTLY THE SAME.
|

Mine sound the same!
How are they pronounced differently? |
Estella Post Count: 1779 |
WELL, 'COT' IS PRONOUNCED WITH AN ENGLISH 'O' SOUND.
'CAUGHT' IS PRONOUNCED WITH AN AWE/OR SOUND, AND RHYMES WITH: 'FOUGHT', 'OUGHT', 'BOUGHT', 'PORT', 'SORT', ETC. THE VOWEL SOUND IN 'CAUGHT' IS LONGER THAN THE VOWEL SOUND IN 'COT', AND THE BACK OF THE MOUTH SLIGHTLY MORE CLOSED AND TIGHTER. |

Your 'port' rhymes with 'caught'? This I must hear! And when I tried to make 'sort' rhyme it came out as 'sought'. Do those sound the same to you (sort and sought)?
|

I am curious how caught rhymes with port and sort? Haha, but my cot sound the same as "fought" and "ought" and "caught", so I'm not sure of the difference. xD
People tell me I have an accent though and I don't hear it. One of my friends laughed at how I pronounced a word because I pronounced the "a" sound differently than he did. But I didn't understand how I was pronouncing it differently. |

I say 'roar' for raw too.

YES, YO - ENGLISH PEOPLE SAY 'LITRALLEE' (SOME MAY REMEMBER THE INFAMOUS PUCK-HATING ENGLISH BLOOPER WHO WOULD ALWAYS SPELL IT 'LITRALI'! ;D). AMERICANS PUT IN A LOT OF SYLLABLES THAT ARE SILENT HERE, YO. ODDLY, FOR MANY WORDS, THE POSHER THE ACCENT, THE FEWER THE SYLLABLES.

Even the Scots do that one. ;)

I was watching a video recently in which two friends, one British and one American, were both saying "aluminum."
How do you pronounce it? We pronounce is like "uh-loo-min-um" and he pronounced it like "a-lim-in-yum." Is that usual? |
~RedFraggle~ Post Count: 2651 |
Lol. I remember having this exact same discussion with a couple of Americans who we met in New Zealand 9 years ago!
Brits say al-u-min-ee-um. I do believe it's actually spelt differently too though. We spell it aluminium. |
Hayley McBayley Post Count: 76 |
I'm British and I say it how the man on this website says aluminium.
