I was sure you could turn it off completely, but I can't seem to find it now.

But if you get a message telling you someone has replied to your post, you can turn all alerts off for that thread by hitting 'cancel all alerts for this thread' within the message. So if Feisty REALLY wasn't enjoying having 8 messages in her inbox when she logs in (and we all know she really is), she could just hit that link and she would no longer be bothered by anyone. Somehow I doubt that'll happen though. It prevents her getting the last word.
