Ok, so a Tory Lib Dem coalition would mean it would be a Tory led government but with some Lib Dems in the cabinet, yes? That is what I gathered from the BBC anyway.

That's my understanding too. I guess it's better than a majority Tory government anyway. Of course we have the Scottish public to thank for the fact that the Tories didn't get a majority... Labour have most of the seats here, and there's only one Tory seat in the whole of Scotland.

Yes, however the Tory's would need to make quite a few important promises for the Lib-dems to agree for a coalition government, hence Labour and Tory both promising electoral reform straight away. Roles within government may not just be Tory, they may decided a member of the Lib-dem government is better a job, but on the whole the Lib-dems would have deputy roles really.

The Tories are the Conservative Party. They won the most seats in the election, but without a majority (more than 50% of the seats), so they cannot form government without forming a coalition with another party.
The Lib Dems are the Liberal Democrat Party, the biggest of the minority parties (or the smallest of the three big parties, depending on how you look at it), and the party most likely to form a coalition with the Tories and give them the seats they need to form a government. The Labour party is the other big party here, and they were previously in power, but lost this time, coming in second place. |

Thanks Transit. I was following the election all last night but had to go to bed at some point and so missed the next round of news. Last I heard, they still hadn't declared that it would be a hung government. Going back to check the news now.
I just hope that if the Lib Dems do decide to share with the Tories that they can hold up to them and not end up in the whole mess as it did in Ireland with the result of our last election. Someone needs to make sure that the Tories don't completely reduce the system back to a conservative state after all the progress that was made on reform. So, I'm guessing that everyone has been counted now? There was talk that there would be several constitionaries that wouldn't be until several days later. On another note, there was talk that the Tories might try to share with Labour as they are the two majorities. I can't back this up, as it was just a comment that was made while they were still in the earlier stages of counting, but what is everyone's opinion of who will hook up with the Tories in the end? And what kind of government (as in changes made to the UK in general) does everyone think this will lead to? |
