He didn't say ALL Canadians speak Russian. He said Russian is one of the many languages in Canada.

Then, logically, it would have made more sense to say "English, French, and many others." Since those are our two first languages, and that's what Red Fraggle initially asked. If he wanted to include that we are a multicultural society, then logically, at least to me, it would make more sense to say that we have many different languages on top of English and French.

But you could say that about anywhere. We're discussing the COMMON languages spoken in these countries, not every single language anyone there speaks.

Hell if someone in a country speaking one language makes it official, America is screwed. o.O

You're right about New Zealand. A lot of schools there are still bi-lingual and it also depends on your cultural background. Whilst a good chunk of Maori people do not speak much Maori, there is still a high number that do in their communities.
Even as a little white kid, I was still expected to learn and speak Maori at my school. I was allowed to speak English in my classes (except for Maori class, we were made to converse in Maori), but there were classes that comprised of only Maori children and they spoke only Maori in that room, except when in English lessons.

1. Portugal - Portuguese, is what I'd assume ;D
2. Austria - I believe it's a form of german/hungarian mix. I know that it used to be Austria-Hungary (My family is from hungary, and they speak a bit of german/hungarian mix. So my brain thinks austrians would as well!)
3. Belgium - Belgeese? >_> I've honestly never thought of that before! I have no clue!
4. New Zealand - English ;D With an amazing accent!
5. Luxembourg - Eee. I have no idea on this one either! If I remember correctly, after the Vatican, its the richest country in the world?
6. The Netherlands - DUTCH!
7. Scotland - Scottish? or English. (hides)
8. Wales - ...when I first read this my brain went 'wales isnt a country' It's just a part of the united kingdom, yes? Pretty sure they speak english.
9. Ireland - Gaelic/English.
10. Canada - French and English are the official languages. French is mainly in Quebec, although its in the rest of the country as well.
11. Brazil - Portuguese
12. Mexico - Spanish. (NOT MEXICAN >_< If I read that someone put mexican, I'm yelling.)
13. South Africa - I believe English here as well. Although I'm sure being africa there's another language as well.

*sigh* Please see my answers further down the thread about Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Where do you guys GET this idea from? Almost every American who has answered has answered no. 7 with "Scottish"! Thanks for humouring me though. ;) I appreciate the honesty. And the opportunity to educate. :)

And the UK is made up of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

At least I'm pretty sure that's where I heard it from, as I've never known someone who was from Scotland before.

Hmmm... how weird. I can't imagine why they'd say on TV that people speak Scottish, when we don't. Lol. Still, I guess it wouldn't be the first time that incorrect information is given on TV, and if it's SUCH a common misconception, it's hardly surprising the media are reinforcing it (although journalists really should know better).

I shall make it my mission to educate as many Americans as possible then. ;)

By TV I don't mean like, the news. I mean TV shows/movies, and stuff like that.

Hmmm... I wonder why I haven't seen these movies/TV shows. It's perhaps a good thing... if I saw a movie that suggested the Scottish walk about speaking gaelic, it would most likely prompt a long rant, rather similar to the ones I regularly write about the medical inaccuracies in Grey's Anatomy!

In fact, even the worst, most stupidly cliched Scottish set movies I have ever seen, that awful Made of Honour, didn't show any Scots speaking gaelic. The irony being of course that Made of Honour was set in one of the very few Scottish communities that actually DO still speak gaelic fluently, the Isle of Skye. ;D

It could be worse though... my dad once met an American who didn't think we had electricity or computers in Scotland!

Lol there's no such language as Scottish. There's only English and Scottish gaelic, and only a very tiny number of Scots speak it.

And if you HAD known someone Scottish before, you would have known that we speak English, and only English. Lol. So if it's not coming from your education, I guess it may well be the media.

I remember watching Rab C Nesbitt on the TV when I was a kid... and thinking he was talking a completely different language to me, because his accent was so heavy! But you must forgive me, I was only about 7! lol

Though a lot of Scottish TV shows and films get subtitled for release in America (and even England!) because some Americans (and to a lesser extent, English people!) can't understand the thicker accents very well.

That is probably perpetuating the notion Scottish people speak "Scottish", or something non-English, the fact that Americans hear a Scottish accent and assume it's talking a different language because it is subtitled! :-o

They might get it from the accent. (SOME) Scottish people can be so hard to understand that it doesn't sound like they're speaking English at all :P
