AH. OUT OF CURIOSITY, DO YOU FIND A LOT OF NON-LOCAL BRITS PRONOUNCE IT THE WAY I SAID? I FIND THERE ARE SOME PLACES THAT HAVE SUCH WEIRD PRONUNCIATIONS THAT ONLY THE LOCALS KNOW THE PRONUNCIATION, AND THE REST OF BRITS MERRILY PRONOUNCE IT IN THE WAY THAT SEEMS TO MAKE SENSE. LIKE, EVERYONE KNOWS THINGS LIKE 'WORCESTERSHIRE', BUT THERE ARE ALL KINDS OF MORE OBSCURE NAMES THAT HAVEN'T BEEN POPULARISED BY A CONDIMENT AND THEREFORE DON'T GET GENERAL EXPOSURE! (ALTHOUGH, BELVOIR MAY WELL BE COMMONLY KNOWN TO MOST OTHER BRITS WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE).
GOSH, YO - WHEN I WAS IN EDINBURGH, I WAS MERRILY REFERRING TO THE STREET NAME 'COCKBURN', LIKE, WELL, EXACTLY AS IT LOOKS LIKE IT SHOULD BE PRONOUNCED! IT WAS QUITE ENTERTAINING ME UNTIL I WAS INFORMED IT WAS PRONOUNCED 'COE-BUN'. THEN ALL MY FUN WAS SPOILT! ;D |

Locals often get it wrong and pronounce it as you did, a village here called Croxton is often how pronounced it is written by non-locals, the correct way to say it is crow-son. Rauceby is often pronounced wrongly, it should be Ross-bee, not roarsby which is how a lot of people say it.

Noh-ich, ich pronounced as itch, the o in noh is short and sharp when i say it.
|
Estella Post Count: 1779 |
WHAT, YO? YOU DON'T PUT AN 'R' IN IT? I'VE NEVER HEARD IT WITHOUT AN R. WHAT CONSONANT DO YOU PLACE BETWEEN THE 'OH' AND THE 'ITCH'?

I think its how i pronounce h's, you know when you say hour, it kind of sounds like a very long h, I do that in norwich and it accentuates the o. nooohich

HAHAHA - NO, YO, IT'S NEVER VETTY. AMERICANS LIKE TO WRITE POSH ENGLISH 'VERY' AS 'VEDDY' (AND THE 'D' WOULD BE THE SAME SOUND AMERICANS MAKE FOR THE 'T' IN WORDS LIKE 'BETTER' - BUT IT IS NOT ACTUALLY A 'T'). IT'S SORT OF LIKE A ROLLED R, BUT NOT ROLLED, SO MORE LIKE A D. THE QUEEN DOES IT. HERE, YO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBRP-o6Q85s. SHE DOES IT AT 1:05, WHEN SHE SAYS 'I VERY MUCH HOPE'.

Wuss-ter-sheer
wuss as in wimp ter prounced as though the er sound is like err thats gross sheer as sheer drop |
Estella Post Count: 1779 |
I SAY 'WUSS-TUH-SHUH', YO. NO 'SHEER'. I PRONOUNCE ALL THE 'SHIRE' PLACES AS 'SHUH'.
I HAVE TOTALLY JUST LOOKED UP 'WORCESTERSHIRE' IN MY DICTIONARY AND APPARENTLY WE ARE BOTH RIGHT. THESE ARE TWO ALTERNATIVE PRONUNCIATIONS. |
Transit Post Count: 1096 |
I always says sheer for shire, unless shire is on its own, then Shyre
|
Estella Post Count: 1779 |
YEAH, ON ITS OWN IT'S SHIRE. BUT IN PLACE NAMES LIKE OXFORDSHIRE, I ALWAYS SAY 'SHUH'. IT MUST BE THE SURREY WAY, YO.

AH, YOU HAVE SIBLINGS WITH A DIFFERENT ACCENT FROM YOURS. ME TOO, YO. ALTHOUGH I HAVE NO IDEA HOW MY SISTERS SAY WORCESTERSHIRE - WE'VE NEVER HAD A CONVERSATION INCLUDING THAT WORD!

LOOK, YO - YOU CAN LISTEN HERE TO AN AMERICAN DOING IT RIGHT. ALTHOUGH HE IS SAYING IT THE TRANSIT WAY AND NOT THE PUCK WAY, ALAS. THE PUCK WAY IS NATURALLY BETTER! ;D
