bodega in NY is like a corner store or convienient store. i just googled it and the website i found it says that bodega in Spain is a warehouse specifically for wine and in poland it is a brothel.
Idk how true that is but i thought it was interesting. |

haha my spanish teacher from high school went on vacation somewhere in a latin country and she was at a market she told someone to hand her a bolso which to her means bag but i guess where ever she was bolso was testicles to them. hahaha. needless to say she definitely learned that the hard way.

I think it's because Bolso might be testicles but una bolsa or una bolsita is a bag or small bag... The masculine vs. feminine makes a huge difference LOL. (at least, that's what I learned)
Also, bin men = garbage men, dustbin = garbage can/trash can.. Dust pan = that try you use with a broom to scoop up the dirt after sweeping the floor with a broom... Zip Code vs. Postal code.. Pass-ta vs Pahs-ta (pronunciation) I know there's more but I can't think of many right now ^-^ |

Bolas, is closest thing to testicles that I can think of.
Yeah latinos like to separate everything to masculine and feminine and they also add size. Like Bolsita is little bag... Bolsa is a normal bag. Poco, is "a little", then Poquito is "very little". |

british say sellotape americans say scotch tape i think?
and CV - resume |
Giggle Post Count: 279 |
No sellotape is different than scotch tape. Sellotape is the transparent one but scotch tape is the kinda white one that you can write on.
And I thought everyone said CV until I said it in front of a couple of American friends and they were like huh? Curriculum vitae is Latin I think right? |
Mami 2 ♥ 1 Post Count: 361 |
scotch tape is transparent and small, the kind used to wrap gifts. masking tape is that creme colored tape that u can write on.
|
Giggle Post Count: 279 |
Really? I may be mistaken, but when I used to go buy those tapes from the Archi store they used to call the one we write on scotch tape that's why I thought that's the difference between the two. I've never even heard of masking tape.
I just wiki-ed scotch tape. It says "Although it is a trademarked brand name, it is sometimes used in the US and elsewhere as a generic term for transparent adhesive tape. The Scotch brand includes many different constructions of tape." So apparently there are all kinds of scotch tape but in America they refer to the transparent one as scotch tape... It's different here =] |

Yeah, Scotch Tape is actually a name brand of tape..they make anything from transparent tape (which is what most people in the US refer to when they're talking about Scotch Tape) to tape that you put around corners and doors for painting!

Hayley McBayley Post Count: 76 |
Lol, that is weird that they're called wife beaters. I don't know what I'd think if someone said that to me, I'd just be like..."erm..WHAT?!" lol. I call them tank tops too!

I'm British and I know what a wife beater is. But the first time I heard it was only when The OC started showing over here as Ryan used to always wear wife beaters.
|
Acid Fairy Post Count: 1849 |
It took me ages to work out what a wife beater is. I don't think I'm entirely sure even now. Are they what we'd call a tank top?

Many mothers in Singapore refer pads as "Kotex". Kotex is actually the first pad brand in Singapore. HAHA
We use lifts and not elevators. Water coolers are your water fountatins/bubbler. There is this term called "Mugging" and it refers to studying. And we used the term "Stoning" when we stare into blank space. I know they sounds wrong lol. When I told my England friend that I was mugging, he was very shocked! HAHAHA |

Oh and porridge in our country means congee.

Americans who name their kids RANDY make me giggle.
In the UK "randy" means horny, or promiscuous, or just plain gagging for it. Why'd you want to name your child such filth!? That's just cruel, yo! ;D |
Acid Fairy Post Count: 1849 |
Haha I remember seeing a character in the original Sims called Randy... it amused me for a little while :)
