I am thinking about going to a temp agency or a labor ready just for the temporary work until I start school. I haven't ever done this before, and I was wondering what I should expect.

Like what kind of jobs? I'm more worried about weird people that are going to be there.

Well, it would be based on your experience and what jobs they have really.. personally ive never gone to one, just know a lot of people who have.. like they wouldn't place you in some random construction zone or something, but one day you may work at a coffee shop and then it may change the next day depending on if that same company still needs a temp worker.

Ugh, I hate temps SO much. No offense to you, obviously :P
We have two temps where I work, and they are honest to god the most useless people I've ever met in my life. I've noticed they have the whole "Oh well if they dont want me, I'll go somewhere else." I've had to re-train like six temps for the SAME position now. It's irking my last nerve. I work for a trucking company. We just mainly do data entry, and work flow fluctuates (hence the temps versus permanent employees). We enter what's on trailers and give them to the people on the dock to get them unloaded. If you live in a city with a large airport or near someplace where there are a lot of imports (like Chicago, which is an hour south of where I live) I'd think you'd get something like that. I personally think it's a lot of fun. (minus some cranky people.) For the most part people leave you alone to do your own thing. haha. |

My mom is the office manager at a temp place. She takes the applications and calls people for the jobs. If you can find someone who really wants to help then it's a good experience.

I worked for a temp agency for about 6 months doing the same job, administrative assistant type thing. I knew the boss of the temp agency personally so not sure if my experience was different than normal but it wasn't bad at all. They just help you find a job, cause many businesses use temps so they don't have to give health insurance and sometimes if they just need someone for a limited time. You'd fill out paper work for the agency and based on your qualifications they'd work on finding something for you, you can always turn it down if it's not for you. Since you work for the agency all the paper work is with them and all the business gets is an interview.
Jessica made me laugh cause it's true. Most people who go to temp agencies are people who can't hold down a job for a variety of reasons. However with this economy that has changed. I do remember tho when I started at my job they were soo amazed I could do the simplest things and I felt like saying that a monkey could do it lol. Anyways now that I've written a novel, good luck! : ] |

HAHA - WELL, TO BE FAIR, A LOT OF TEMPERS ARE STUDENTS, OR MOTHERS WHO NEED TO WORK AROUND THEIR KIDS. AT LEAST, IN HEALTH CARE. AND MANY OF THEM HAVE BEEN DOING IT YEARS, AND ARE JOLLY RELIABLE. A FEW LAZY BUGGERS THOUGH!

I DO HEALTHCARE TEMP AGENCY. IT'S GREAT, YO. LIKE YOU CHOOSE THE SHIFTS YOU WANT TO WORK, YOU GET VARIETY OF WORKPLACES, AND YOU DON'T GET ALL OF THE STAFF POLITICS CRAP. YOU DO GET SOME PLACES WHERE THERE IS A BAD ATTITUDE TOWARDS AGENCY THOUGH, AND PLACES WHERE THEY DON'T TELL YOU ESSENTIAL STUFF SPECIFIC TO THE WORKPLACE AND THEN GET ANNOYED THAT YOU DON'T KNOW IT. MY ADVICE - ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS, BE FRIENDLY AND DON'T GOSSIP. IF IN A JOB SETTING YOU ARE ASKED TO DO SOMETHING YOU DON'T FULLY UNDERSTAND, THEN EXPLAIN YOU NEED MORE GUIDANCE/TRAINING. LIKE, THEY SOMETIMES FORGET YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE EVERYTHING IS, AND ALL THE LITTLE QUIRKS, LIKE THE FACT THAT THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE THE SHOWER WORK IS TO TURN THE UPSTAIRS KITCHEN TAPS ON FULL BLAST!
