Wow.. Heated thread. But I am afraid my response won't help calm it down as I agree with those that are frustrated. If the dog was current on its shots - Parvo wouldn't of happened.

Most self respecting vets do not send a dog home with Parvo and no medication so you ought to be honest as to why that has happened.
I know first hand that the treatment is outrageously expensive. For my brothers almost 4 year old dog it was almost $2K.

I can understand people not taking their dog to a groomer (I don't)
or not thinking their pet is another child (Roxy is our DOG not our child) but I do not understand people who would keep an animal as a pet and treat it as if it were or worse a farm animal. Take your pets to the vet, stay up to date on ALL shots or you really shouldn't be an owner to a pet.

I realize how expensive Parvo can get. Doobie got it when he was only a few months old and we paid out the ass for him. We took him to the Vet at Petsmart. After spending all day there and them treating him, they said that we could take him home and bring him back three times a day for treatments. The Vet knew what she was doing because Doobie is now a year old.

I don't have the time nor energy to sit here and argue with you or anyone else about this. This dog has also been treated and is getting the proper care that he needs so it's no point in having a long darwn out argument about it.

Holy crap. Two grand? It's half that here! I'd do anything for my kids (my 4 legged furry children - I have no human kids), but wow.

Dia is his child lol. And also his service dog. He's one of our many wounded warriors and we (the family) would of paid any price to ensure she survived. Since then he's had 12 more surgeries - the first thing he asks when he's awake after one is "Where's Dia?"

From one military family to another, thank him for us! That is too cute! My girls mean the world to me. I would be lost without them.

animals can still get parvo even if they have had their shots. ffs, you are a judgemental lot. she was asking how to help the pup feel better sooner, not for a substitute for veterinary care. yeesh.

Thank you! That's exactly what I was doing. I did take him to see a Vet and to get treated. I was just wondering if there was anything else I could do to get him feeling a little more comfortable or better. That's all. I didn't intend on having a long drawn out argument over this. I just didn't feel like writing out every single detail about the Vet visit and what not. You know?

This is back on the vet thing, don't worry I'm not judging. Most vets these days are NOT TAUGHT BY EXPERIENCE but by READING BOOKS. Vet schools are NO longer based on experience hours, but grades. I feel bad that you got attacked by certain people just because you asked for an at-home remedy. You clearly have the dog's well being in mind, otherwise you wouldn't go through the trouble at all, esp with it not being yours anyway. Some people are just quick to judge I guess, their way or the highway as it were.

Thank you for your support :) I thought it was funny that I got attacked before any one of them cared to ask if I had taken the dog to the freaking Vet or not. Yeah, I hate how certain people are so quick to judge. Oh well.

Especially if you had already taken it to the vet, you obvi weren't asking for money saving remedies. Vets are expensive, and you mentioned already having the dog treated. Now you just want to make him feel better, which I think is noble. :) It's always frustrating to see a pet in pain and you don't know how to fix it...

I'm glad someone else sees that I wasn't trying to be a cheap ass or anything. Like I said previous, I know how expensive trying to save a dog from Parvo is. My dachshund had it and the final bill will outrageous. Shit, if I wanted to be cheap; I would have done the same for him. Yes, that is so frustrating and upsetting.

This isn't meant as an attack or anything and I understand that you thought the dog was up to date with all his shots but the parvo virus stays in soil as well as any other surface for upto 12 years. So If your dog suffered with it previously it's likely that that's the reason this dog you have now has picke dup the virus. Not even bleach can kill it 100%. I'm only saying this so that if you ever want to take on another dog it's highly likely that they will pick it up to. I hope your dog pulls through, I know how hard it is to lose a puppy to parvo :( and how expensive it is too.

I totally understand what you are saying. Trust me, I do. But I'm pretty sure the dog was sick previously and that is why he was forced on me. I know that bleach or nothing else will kill Parvo in the house and around the yard. That's why we have been and are still wanting to get another puppy because if I can help it, I don't want to have to make another puppy go through what Doobie did.

Actually, the right concentration of bleach does kill the parvo virus. I work at a vet and we use it at work all of the time. For a bland diet, you could try I/D. It is an intestinal diet that is easy on the tummy. Here... for future reference, check out this link and the ones to the right side of the page. Treatment (at the vets around here, anyways) can range between 100-200 dollars a day because of the intensive care, all of the fluids and medications, plus the special foods and injections. It's crazy. And actually, (from reading a comment from above somewhere) cats can get parvo. It isn't called parvo and it is a little easier to treat, but it is called panleukopenia. Just an FYI. :)

Hope your pup makes it through okay! Only about half of them do. :(
