yes, it's a Meme, one that is attached many different meanings to, that are not necessarily Mayan at all.

our sun aligns with the galactic center, on the galactic equator, every 24 thousand years. There is so much mythology, doom saying, fear mongering, shifts in consciousness associated in the Meme. but all of that has very little to do with what the Mayan calendar ,marks- the 24,000 year alignment, that happens well, every 24,000 years. and again how very wise and excellent astronomers to able able to figure this out. Now that only thing scholars debate on this, is whether or not the Mayans knew what a galaxy was, or did they just observe the movement of the stars, and our position to them.

Not to mention - if a person is a Christian they have no reason to buy into the end of the world theory. Which is why I choose to go with the new dawn of something major or a major event. Not saying that perhaps there will be dramatic horrible things that might happen. Just saying it will not (in my belief) be the total and complete end of the world. Anyone who is a Christian ought to know that there are Bible verses to back that up.

Like the billions of others suns do it all the time, every second of every day, at all times suns in our galaxy are at galactic center, and nothing happens. but measuring our own sun's movement from our perspective is a great way to measure a large period of time. It;s not an urban legend, and has nothing to do with atheism.

Secondly there are papers published (see: John Major Jenkins) about the galactic equator and how it takes our position on the arm/branch of our galaxy 24,000 years to pass through it. what many prof. such as John Hoopes discuss in their classes. Which I explained this in the opening statement, you should have read first.

and i'm clarifying how the urban myth came to be, that how it's nothing at all to worry about, that this happens every day in our galaxy. and is happening to us, right now.

My position is that if you can explain what actually does happen on 2012. You get better results than saying of it;s just some urban legend and I'm an atheist (whatever that means)

i love this stuff. i actually did my senior research paper on disproving 2012. it's funny how people are freaking out about this calandar..there are many others, and i think (if i'm not mistaken with the actual percentage) 90% of the Mayan culture (books, calandars, etc) was destroyed after the civilization fell..so there could have been more calandars that we did not know about. and most mayans seen it as a blessing to make it to the end of a cycle, and there was a large celebration...not the end of the world.
