Hey everyone! I'm going to be a mommy in October and right now I'm doing research on cloth diapers v. disposables. I want to at least TRY cloth diapers... but I want to know everyones experiences with them. Advice is also welcome (brands, types, etc.) Also if you want to let me know how much you spent on them, what additional things I'll need, etc.

Basically, any information on cloth diapers would be welcomed. :]

i'm not a mommy, but my mom used cloth diapers on me because i was reallyyy allergic to the disposable ones. that's why i'll use them when i have kids - i think they're healthier for the baby.

Seaster, my oldest sister lives in maple valley and uses cloth and has them delivered and picked up for cleaning idk what company it is but I can ask her... I know maple valley is a couple of hours away but I'm sure there's things like that in the terrace/lynnwood/Edmonds area

Don't be! honestly you'll get into a routine of it really fast and you'll wonder what all the fuss was about! its so easy!

I been hearing about these new diapers that are cloth and biodegradable, called gdiapers. Do you want to use specifically cloth only?

We love cloth. Ive used them since my DD was born. mostly uk brands so i cant help you there, but i have used motherease (wraps are awesome) and fuzzy bunz too.
theres various types
2 part nappies which are terry/cloth inner(usually shaped now but some use terry squares still), with an outer waterproof wrap (you can get lots of cute ones), you use the wrap more than once, but the terry bit goes in the wash. the down side to this is that the wetness of a terry is on the baby's skin, but you can use fleece liners to help that. these come in 2-3 sizes, you usually use size 1 from newborn to 9 months and size 2 upwards til potty training. (i've mostly used these type)


pocket nappies which also have two parts, the outer bit with the pocket that you stuff with a soaker... adding more absorbancy is easy as you just put extra boosters/soakers in. soakers come in various absorbant fabrics including microfibre, hemp, bamboo, terry etc.
the inside of the 'pocket' has fleece which pee goes right through and keeps the baby dryer. The whole thing goes into the wash once its soiled/wet. you can get birth to potty sizes for these now, which means only one set of nappies! some come in different sizes though, depends on the brand.

all in ones which are just like disposible except washable, just one part that you take on and off, these seem easy but it means you can't adjust the absorbancy as easily as with the other two.

now you can get part disposible/part washable and i'm sure someone will be along shortly to explain.

When it comes to washing we just chuck them in a dry bin until we have enough to wash, then wash on a 60degrees(thats uk though!) with no fabric conditioner (this puts oil in them and makes them less absorbant)

you'll need about 15-20 for full time use... to be honest the more the merrier... you can never have too many!! if you're doing cloth you may as well go cloth wipes as well as they all go in the same wash and its no more hassle really.
by going cloth its better for your baby(less chemicals on the skin), and miles better when it comes to landfill sites... it takes hundreds of years for disposibles to break down. it also takes alot of trees and oil to make disposible nappies before they even get on your baby.

I have a couple of those birth to potty pocket nappies but I don't know if I'm going to use them or not. If I can get the G-Diapers supplies easily enough I'll use those but if not I'll be using Pampers Dry Max disposables. :)

Wow that link was pretty scary, I absolutely love the new Pampers though I've never had any issues and have not had a leak yet and my son used to pee through his diaper everynight.

I was going to use cloth diapers, but where we lived didn't have washer and drier hook ups and such so I went with disposable. Plus, Marissa was a little poop machine. I wouldn't have been able to keep up with the cleaning of them and all. She pooped about every ten minutes I would think. I'd never seen a baby poop so much before. I have cloth diapers though, but I used them as burp clothes. We usually use Luvs disposable because they are cheaper and work great. No problems with leaks or rashes. Huggies overnight diapers are amazing as well. No exploding diapers at night anymore.

yeah, I didnt now bout it either ..luckily I only bought a small pack.. sooo I only wasted like 10 bucks... but I knew something was up when I had changed her no more than 2 or 3 hours before and she was fine.. then next thing I knew her whole bottom was turning red.. luckily I had some other tucked away in the diaper bag and used those until I could go get a different kind. I looked it up online and found NUMEROUS complaints against Pampers and I felt horrible for doing that to her..

I would try out cloth.. but I dont have a washer/dryer and only do laundry once a week :-/

Karissa, I could talk for hours about cloth diapers. When peanut is born I think it will be easiest to use a pre-fold (the kind that look like burp clothes). You can go on youtube and find videos on how to fold them and put them on peanut properly. When peanut is old enough to start moving around and wont sit still I would suggest BSRB diapers or Goodmama's brand. I will give u all the links to look at.

I liked these diapers the best because of the awesome designs and the softness of the cloth. You won't have to worry about pants for awhile when using these if you want to show of his cotton butt. These diapers also grow with the baby so you wont have to buy different sizes. You just throw them in the washer.

Moises and I tried Bumgenius for a few months but the stentch that it holds was not attractive and the material really irritated him.

When I was a baby, I wore cloth diapers, and I've grown up to be clever and beautiful, so, like, cloth diapers are the way to go!
