News just broke that the man responsible for the 9/11 attacks has been killed. The president will address the nation in 3 minutes.

oh screw you I was just posting this. I'm posting it here anyways!! ;)
Just curious if anyone else is watching the footage about this on the news. There will be a presidential address soon, for those not watching. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/ - there is a link in the red box at the top of the page to watch the live footage right now. |

I didnt know he was dead until I read Anon's update...We were watching netflix. I will admit I am crying many tears of joy tonight. I have lost a foster brother as well as friends in this fight, they were not in Iraq, but in Afganistan, its such joyous news.....wow..that sounds cold, I never thought I would be so happy over a death.

strange isnt it? As a christian I am not supposed to squeal in glee at the news of the death of someone, espec when its purposeful at the hands of another. But lemme tell you - I woke up my house and text those I knew were already asleep

It's called "Schaedenfreude" and it's perfectly normal.
die Reinste freude ist die Schaedenfreude. "The purest joy is the darkest joy." Meaning, nothing is as pleasurable as when misfortune happens to ones enemies. |

Also demonstrated by the Munchkins merrily singing 'Ding Dong the witch is dead'. Fairy tale type stories are always much more honest about such instincts than today's society is comfortable with!

@Meghans Follie: It's breaking news worldwide. Except for those living in a shell, I guess.
I watched it online when the news broke out and have been reading about it since. I'm glad that Bin Ladin is no more; he was such an evil man- he doesn't deserve to be kept alive after the horrible things he has done; but the problem is, now his followers are going to want revenge for his death... |: |

Usama bin Laden is dead, multiple sources confirm to Fox News.
President Obama is expected to deliver a statement from the White House Sunday night to discuss the major development. Sources said bin Laden was killed by a U.S. bomb a week ago. The U.S. had been waiting for the results of a DNA test to confirm his identity. The announcement comes nearly a decade after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks which started a tireless hunt for the terrorist mastermind and Al Qaeda leader. Jellyka: That's because his real name IS USAMA!
|
Jessica Post Count: 283 |
Not from what I've seen.
Google returns NO results for "Usama Bin Laden". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osama_bin_Laden I'm going with Osama. |

Jellyka: according to Wikipedia, it says this:
Variations of bin Laden's name There is no universally accepted standard in the West for transliterating Arabic words and names into English, so bin Laden's name is spelled in many different ways. The version translation most often used by English-language mass media is Osama bin Laden. Most American government agencies, including the FBI and CIA, use either "Usama bin Laden" or "Usama bin Ladin", both of which are often abbreviated to UBL. Less common renderings include "Ussamah Bin Ladin" and "Oussama Ben Laden" (French-language mass media). The last two words of the name can also be found as "Binladen" or (as used by his family in the West) "Binladin". The spelling with "o" and "e" comes from a Persian-influenced pronunciation used in Afghanistan where he lived for a long time. |

I stand corrected.
It's a personal preference though, as I've never seen it used as Usama before. But, you do also cancel out your own point. It does say that there is no universally accepted translation. Which means there is no right way to say it. |

Jellyka: It's actually quite common with Arabic translation. You also see it a TON with people that say KORAN...when it's actually Qur'an. LOL
Both are technically right, it's just mostly in the details. |
Meghans Follie Post Count: 433 |
bah its like no one can decide on the spelling of Qaddafi either.. Each network spells it differently
|
Jessica Post Count: 283 |
:| People seriously say Koran? Never seen that one before!
|
Estella Post Count: 1779 |
Yeah, it's what inevitably happens when translating from any different alphabet system. You're just making a phonetic translation of the sounds, which may be slightly different from English sounds. And English has a variety of ways of spelling different words phonetically anyway (as prittii demonstrated! ;D). Hence Tolstoy is also spelt Tolstoi, and there is a variety of spellings for Dostoevsky. And Gaddafi is also spelt Qaddafi and Khaddafi. It can get jolly confusing!

If it's true, that's great news.
Unfortunately, him being dead is not going to stop terrorism or his followers from retaliating. It sucks. I would be more excited if I knew this was going to put a major dent in the terrorist organisations. |
