A German company has concocted an edible tribute to Barack Obama that some say is in bad taste. Frozen food company Sprehe has announced the trial release of a new product it calls "Obama Fingers," the English edition of the German newspaper Der Speigel reported. The snack, More..pieces of fried chicken breast, comes with "a tasty curry sauce," according to its package. While some might find a disturbing racial overtone in naming a fried chicken dish after the nation's first African American president, Sprehe sales manager Judith Witting said the company was unaware of the stereotype linking African Americans and fried chicken. "It was supposed to be a homage to the American lifestyle and the new U.S. president," Witting told the German newspaper. "We noticed that American products and the American way of eating are trendy at the moment," and the company wanted to boost sales by capitalizing on that trend, she said. The "Obama Fingers" are the newest item on a growing list of Obama-themed products in the market, which includes everything from commemorative plates and T-shirts to thong underwear and bar soap. |

It's a German company. How ere they supposed to know about the stereotyping Americans have placed with black people and fried chicken? It seems a perfectly innocent tribute to me. Some people are just too quick to call racism.

Just because they're in Germany doesn't mean they are oblivious to the rest of the world.
I think people IN America are more likely to be offended by it than otherwise, though. |

I DUNNO - THE STEREOTYPE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE AND CHICKEN IS QUITE AN OBSCURE ONE. LIKE YOU DON'T TEND TO SEE IT ON MOVIES OR AMERICAN MEDIA IN GENERAL, AND IT'S NOT SOMETHING MOST AMERICANS TALK ABOUT. SO NOT KNOWING THAT AMERICANS ASSOCIATE BLACK PEOPLE WITH CHICKEN DOESN'T MEAN BEING OBLIVIOUS TO THE REST OF THE WORLD. LIKE, GOSH, I'VE LIVED IN VERY INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITIES, AND I TEND TO KNOW MORE AMERICAN STEREOTYPES AND LANGUAGE DIFFERENCES THAN A LOT OF BRITS, BUT I NEVER LEARNT ABOUT THE BLACK/CHICKEN ONE UNTIL SOMEONE MADE A PURPOSELY POLITICALLY INCORRECT ENTRY ON BLOOP. AND THEN I WAS ALL 'ER... I DON'T GET IT. WHAT IS FUNNY ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE EATING CHICKEN?'

I didn't say they were oblivious to the rest of the world. But if you lived in another country, why would you have NEED to know of some other countries silly little stereotypes, like this one? You wouldn't. And unless you regularly talk to someone who believes that stereotype, how else are you going to know about it? You're really not.

lol maybe it was genuinely not intended to be racist, but I still think it's hilarious the fact that any type of food would be branded with Obama's name without it being some kind of dish Obama has popularized! For example if he went into a diner and ordered his burger a certain way, then they re-sell that type burger with his name on it! This is just trying to sell stuff because it has his name on it :P
