A woman in Arkansas is pregnant with two babies -- but not twins. When she went in for a routine ultrasound, doctors discovered that Julia Grovenburg had a second fetus, a male, growing alongside her first, a female, according to ABC News.

This extremely rare medical condition is known as superfetation and occurs when a woman conceives a second child when she's already pregnant. “When the woman had her ultrasound initially, they saw one sack, one baby developing, and that baby had a certain gestational age; then they noticed a second heartbeat in a child that was much, much younger developmentally,” Karen Boyle, M.D., of the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, told ABC News.

How is that possible? The video I'm watching said that she could only find about 10 cases reported ever; I read a comment on a different website where they said something similar.... o___O

They said because the babies were conceived about 3 weeks apart that they'll be delivered at the same time most likely.

Even if they weren't so close in gestational age, the chances of them being delivered at the same time are very great, which is why the youngest one in cases like this is at risk for complications due to prematurity. reIt's very rare something like this happens, but of the cases I have heard of, I have yet to hear of one they were able to deliver separately at their own due dates regardless of the difference in gestational age.

that'll be so odd for them when people ask "oh you much older/younger are you?" "three weeks" lol.

Haha that's crazy! I guess that bursts my husband's bubble about well she's already pregnant so I can't get her pregnant again! I hope the second baby is born healthy.

Yeah, this sort of thing is really, extremely rare-almost impossible. I've read it might not actually be superfetation in this particular case. They can't confirm it until after the births, so that'll be interesting. It seems more likely that it is twins, and the boy is developing more slowly- or some other genetic factor is making him seem to be at a 'younger' gestation. At least, that's what some doctors are saying about this case.

If it was superfetation, I thought she would have more than 1 uterus -but that was not mentioned in this story. Anyway, if it really is, they will just have to deliver them as if they are twins, when they are both safely developed enough.
