my mother-in-law (and her sister) left this morning. they'd been here since friday. it is so nice to have my house back, and sit here in peace and quiet.
first off, it was as nice a visit as i'd hoped for in the middle of winter without a whole lot to do. thankfully joshua could take time off work, and i'm very glad that he got to visit with his family, and show his mom our place.
now, i'm going to do some venting. i've never quite gotten along with my mother-in-law. we're civil, but we will never be friends. and i think i finally put my finger on why: she's one of the most negative people i've ever met. nothing is good enough. we went to dinner at one of our favourite restaurants, and she thought it was shit. josh took them shopping one day to a big, full mall, and there was "nothing there". she thought my mom (with whom josh has a great relationship) was being rude to him. it was too cold here (as if we have control over the weather?). i know our house wasn't clean enough for her standards, but i played that off with my "i'm a cripple" excuse. my coffeemaker (keurig) is "disgusting", we don't use the right type of cleaner for our stovetop, our dog should have boots, that sort of thing. just little things that add up. a week is a long time.
there were bright spots to the visit, definitely. she cooked a couple of nights, including her homemade pizza that i love. she likes to keep busy, so took it upon herself to wash some of our walls and floors, which i will admit sorely needed it.
but just ugh. i spent the week smiling and nodding. she can pick apart my house, my choice in clothes and decor, whatever... i'm just saving up to battle when she eventually critiques my parenting. because that will happen, and i will be a fierce mama bear. in the meantime, i'll just keep my cool, and scam her pizza crust recipe. |
