i'm at my parents'. yay long weekend.
the highlight thus far: my brilliant plan to make sushi with my sister. she's 14 and due to the lack of japanese restos around, has taught herself how to roll maki. i've been saying for a few years that i wanted to learn how to make sushi, but was discouraged/lazy due largely to the interwebs essentially telling me that it was messy, tough to get right, and mastering it would take far more effort than ordering it does.
anyway, i told aspen that i'd bring all of the components if she'd teach me what to do. essentially i prepared the rice myself (the most daunting part), and she taught me the tricks of rolling. we kept it simple with california rolls and salmon rolls, and a few pieces of nigiri. to be honest, i was VERY impressed with myself. my rolls weren't perfect, but for a sushi-making virgin they were pretty damn good. certainly not as bad as i'd expected. the rice was perfect in flavour and texture, and i'm really hoping that it wasn't just beginner's luck.

so, who's coming over for a sushi party? |
