since we moved, i haven't really made friends. i have one friend in town, from my childhood, and we've only gone out once. i'm not throwing a pity party, because the internet/texting keeps me in touch with all of my friends, and i'm sort of a homebody to begin with, but i'd be lying if i said i wasn't a little lonely/bored. today, i decided to do something about it. i put up a "let's be friends" ad on kijiji (like craigslist) and felt sort of like a loser doing so, but fuck it, we'll see where it goes.
i also contacted the local roller derby team. i'm not in a position to take on the fresh meat tryouts, but i have volunteered to be a non-skating official. their first home bout isn't until april, but that gives me something to look forward to. i emailed the girl who runs things, and she wrote back almost immediately, and seemed genuinely psyched to have me help out. i'm really excited, because i've wanted to be involved in derby in some capacity for a long time, but didn't have the balls to do it in toronto, not even as a volunteer/merch girl/whatever. i think this will be a great way to put myself out there and meet some people. |

You're being so brave, go you. Going this route with roller derby will mean that everyone will be rooting for you if you eventually try out because you'll be a part of the team already.
