Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow

12/04/2010

It's looking more like Christmas every day, but especially today after a nice, sturdy snowfall last night. We're supposed to get more of the fluffy white stuff today and tonight, and could wind up with about eight inches when it's all said and done. I'd be happy if it were already Christmas, but at least the weather waited until December to dump on us.

The first new snow is a novelty. Everything looks so beautiful, blanketed in white, before it gets filthy from cars and people trucking through it. The bare trees glisten and shimmer as the sun glints off the snow. It's like a picture postcard heralding the upcoming holidays. If it could stay this beautiful all winter long, perhaps I wouldn't get such a case of the drearies, but it won't stay, because as the poet wrote, "Nothing gold can stay."

Bonus points to you if you remember what 80's movie used that poem and line. It was one of my favorite movies of the 80's, based on a book I loved, and it featured an all-star cast of brat packers. Stevie Wonder wrote and sang the theme song to the movie, and it went along with the poem.

I've got a joke for you that was posted on Facebook, so keep it going by posting it in your own diary entries somewhere today.

Why is a Christmas tree better than a man?
It stays up for 30 days and nights, has cute balls, and looks good with the lights on.

Even Al had to laugh at that one, before he said, "You women are f'd up!" Maybe so, but you laughed, didn't you?

On the agenda for today, it looks like Al will be doing some shoveling before we go out to pick up a case of water and deodorant for my sister, who requested we bring these things with us for her when we visit tomorrow. She also asked Mom for some CD's she can record to, and I told Mom she can buy those cuz we're broke after buying the water and deodorant. We've got enough money left for gas next week and that's it. We're down to the wire again.

Guess I probably shouldn't tell Al that I bought two pairs of thermal underwear because I needed them and have been looking for them for months. I finally found them in a Woman Within catalog that came to the house, so I bought two pairs. I will need them when I go to the Bears game. Layering will be the key to me not freezing.

I can't wait for this game. Amy and I are going to have SO much fun! We're playing the Jets, so I'm kind of nervous about losing to them. We always seem to lose when I go to the game, so I'm hoping to break that streak. There's a chance I may also be going to the Bears vs. Packers game at Lambeau Field, which will be the last game of the season. A friend of mine from chat has three tickets and he's actually considering taking me because even though he's a Packer fan and I'm a Bears fan, we'd have a good time with the rivalry during the game. Cross your fingers that he'll actually take me. I SO want to go.

I did wind up making that spaghetti salad last night, and Al had two bowls of it, so I guess that means he liked it. I deviated from the recipe a little bit by adding some cayenne pepper to give it a bit of a kick and he enjoyed that. He told me this morning that I'm learning by deviating and adding things to recipes to make them my own.

I was exhausted by the time he came home last night, and also boiling hot. I had hot flashes like you wouldn't believe. I put on a spaghetti-strap chemise for bed and actually went and stood outside on the porch to get some relief from the heat. That's how hot I was. I figured I got my flu and pneumonia shots this year, I'm safe enough from both to take the chance and stand outside like that. Anyway, I went to bed shortly after Al got home because I just couldn't keep my eyes open any longer.

Well, I guess that's it for now. Stay warm, if it's cold where you are, and enjoy the snow if you got some. First snowfalls are worth enjoying.
