Pre-Yule thoughts

12/17/2008

I'm going to do my year review, of course... but... this year I have this incredible urge to keep it private. A lot happened this year that I'm not sure I really want bandied about in the public sphere. A lot of things didn't go according to plan, and I want to really dive into that, without having to worry about how other people are going to take it.
Looking over my lists though, I did much much better than I expected I would. I did complete nearly all my boasts, and completed over half my goals.
Things I am looking at as boasts for next year:
A month of good turns. I read a really interesting article in one of mom's magazines, and this sounds interesting and in keeping of an overriding goal I have for next year to increase my focus back beyond myself and into the world/community again.
A venting fast. Okay, I got this one from an Oprah magazine, but the idea is interesting. The premise is that venting is a safety valve that allows you to cope with intolerable situations. If you take the venting away, then you're forcing yourself in a position where you have to actually deal with the intolerable situation or explode. I would like very much to stop tolerating things that are intolerable.
Act in a way I would expect a child under my care to act. Just because cruel sub-jokes are a Haviland family institution is no reason to accept that behaviour from myself, for instance. Telling the truth, playing nice, table manners, language, talking through conflicts, please and thank you and excuse me, wash your hands before eating and after bathroom. But also, to treat myself the way I would treat a child acting similarly. Patience and understanding with strict boundaries. Commend proper behaviour while having consistent consequences for improper. No abuse. Hmm... perhaps this could also be an over-riding theme for the year... Seems too big for just one month.
Sugar fast. Tea. Veggies/fruit. Eat dinner at the table. Fancy meals. Meal plan, meal plan, meal plan.
Ritual/routines. Welcoming?
